How Do You Disinfect a Braille Display and Taking Questions on the Orbit Reader 20 Plus (self.Blind)
submitted by TheBlindBookLover
Hi. I recently ordered an Orbit Reader 20 Plus, and it is arriving in a few days. I want to disinfect the device before using it since I am Immuno suppressed but the online user guide recommends only cleaning the device with a slightly damp wash cloth. Have any of you tried using disinfectant wipes on a Braille display? What could go wrong if I did? Also, I noticed that there aren’t any reviews of the Orbit Reader 20 Plus online, so feel free to leave me any questions that you have about the device. I will be sure to respond to your comment or create a new post with my answers after testing it out. Thank you to anyone who responds.

There are no reviews of it since it is very new.

You should only clean piezzo-electric braille cells with certain types of cleaning alcohol because they are very fragile. However, the Orbit doesn't use piezzo-electric cells because it was designed to be more robust. I suggest contacting the agency you purchased it from to ask if disinfectant is OK because it could make the warranty void if something were to go wrong. I think disinfectant should be fine, but I'm an internet stranger.

For disinfecting things where you can't have any liquids on it, you can use a UV-C lamp. That being said, it isn't the easiest set up to use, and there are a lot of fake UV-C lamps out there nowadays (many companies marketing lamps as UV-C when they aren't, because UV rays are invisible).
