Curiosity Q - Do blind folks pick up after their service dogs? (self.Blind)

Yes they do. I used to have a guide dog, and we are taught during training how to do it. You take the dog out on a leash and tell it to do its business. When the dog stops walking around, you touch the dog to feel if it is going. When the dog goes, you move closer to it and point your toe at the pile. When the dog is done, the dog moves around and sits next to you. You then grab a bag from your pocket, put it over your hand and pick up the mess. You then, pull the bag so it is inside out and throw it away.

I also do this with my pet dog. The only thing you never really get used to is the smell. I also would like to point out that any blind person that doesn't pick up after their guide gog in public, shouldn't have one.

Why would I have a hightened sense of smell. Being blind does not give me super powers. Stop getting your information from movies.

That's a common misconception. Blind people don't actually have heightened senses. It's just that we're more used to paying attention to/relying on them. Smells, sounds, etc. aren't really going to be stronger, louder, or more intense. We just might notice something more subtle that a sighted person naturally ignores because it's such a small detail (or we might not). Anyone can train themselves to do that.

I'm not a dog person. This is most of the reasons why.

Yep! Other folks have given the long explanation, but I'll add that vision impairment can make it more challenging and if I missed a bit of my dog's mess I would hope no one thought I left it there on purpose.

I live in the Netherlands (Europe) and if you have a guidedog you automatically have a exemption for picking up your dogs poo. If you have a pet dog you can ask for an exemption by your local county if you're visually impaired. Guidedogs in the Netherlands are trained to do their business in the gutter or on the grass.

Oh man lol. Now i have gross visions in my head.

Anyways curious too tho!! I cant assume that they feel around on the ground for it for 10 minutes, that would look weird..
