Digital products for the blind (self.Blind)
submitted by what_is_riyal
Hello. I'm a sighted person. I'm a UX design student and am looking for ideas to create digital products for the visually impaired.
When I was a young child, I went on a field trip to a visually impaired school and connected with many children of my own age. That experience has stuck with me even now and helped me understand how everyone's experiences and journeys are different. This has been my motivation create for accessibility and inclusion.
Due to the ongoing pandemic, it's very hard to conduct a field research or get people to talk to. As a member of this community, if you want to help, please help me understand the problems you face, even the smallest ones (preferably but not limited to Technology). Any suggestions/ideas/problems are welcome. Also let me know if you would be up for short interviews to help me design for you. Looking forward!

I would say check out Webaim.org and A11Yproject.com. Those two sites are really good places to find out what's currently missing and what needs to be worked on.
After you do some research in those places, I would strongly suggest trying to use some common sites (especially any you might be working on your self) with a screen reader while blindfolded. Trying out at least one PC and one mobile based screen reader is even better!

Judging from previous similar posts on this subreddit, there isn't much we want but don't already have.

I don’t know I would still love the ability to get in a car and go. Self driving technology needs to hurry up and improve.

I think most blind people want that, but it isn't doable for a school design project.

I know it but all I could think of to contradict you.

Right, ofcourse. We believe no product is ever perfect right. How might we improve existing products or target even the smallest of the inconveniences that we all face? In a general scenario we would have conducted our own observation to find gaps and areas to work on but unfortunately that's not possible. Hence reaching out to the best!

As you are without the ability to carry out observations or create real life workshops, perhaps you can get the discussion going by asking people to complete a short survey or similar. This may lead to fruitful discussion. It may bring latent or tacit issues to the surface.

What do you think?

That sounds great! I'm new to reddit so wasn't sure about the survey taking policies. I'm hoping this question gives me some direction to create a survey on and take it forward
