Gifts for my legally blind mom? (self.Blind)
submitted by officegringo
Hello (please delete if not allowed)
I was just wondering if you guys hand any ideas for presents that I could get my mom. My mom can see, but it's not well and she has no peripheal vision. I've tried buying her large print books before, but my mom has to close one eye and squint while she reads and it doesn't look very comfortable.

She's not very feminine, but she does like gaudy jewelry. She already has plenty of that so I'd like to avoid purchasing more. I was more so thinking of an activity that she could do since she's cooped up in the house more than usual for obvious reasons.

Any and all ideas are welcome. Thank you and advance!

Subscription to audible, audio books, could be good

This is a good idea. She doesn't have internet though so I'm not sure how that would go down. I've thought about maybe downloading some books to an iPad like device so she can just press and play. They started talking about getting internet but since it requires people from the company to go and and set it up, I don't think they can do it at the moment.

National Library for the Blind and Print Disabled might be helpful.

Amazing resource thank you!

Also, many Kindle books can have them read out loud. So if you buy the device and put some books on it yourself, she should be able to listen to them. But then you would have to add books to it. This also means she can enlarge the print size to a point where she wants

Best of luck! Hope she has a happy birthday!

Hi. Since she doesn’t have internet according to your other comment, maybe try buying some CD’s with music or audio books with a basic CD player might be fun. If she is religious, an audio bible might mean a lot to her as well. If you know her favorite songs, you could compile a CD with them on it. To make things easier for your mom, try to write the CD name using a dark marker over a white background and tape the label to the CD case.

Does your mom have any other interests? We might have more suggestions with more context.

I hope that this helps.

Would she be open to trying a new hobby like spoon carving? My husband is legally blind from glaucoma. He also doesn't leave the house much, if ever. He started spoon carving with green wood (super fresh, not dried out) last year, and it's been great for filling his time and his confidence. Also helps reduce the frustration that comes with vision loss.

He started with a few basic spoon carving knives. There are lots of YouTube videos and books. It can be done at a table inside. Our tween son is starting to take interest in it, too.

Cool thing is that as one's confidence goes up with it, it could become a way to make some extra money. r/greenwoodworking has good examples of people's work

Another idea: Tactile and high contrast places to put commonly used (and misplaced) objects. I made these for my husband for Christmas last year using AstroTurf and picture frames of various sizes. I used foam ear plugs as 'feet' for the bottom.

Spouse was dubious, but now when he's feeling around for his alarm clock, nail scissors, glasses , wallet, etc, he knows he is getting closer to finding them because he can feel for the AstroTurf texture first.

The best part is these things don't fly off the surface when feeling around for them. Nothing worse than being blind and having to forage around the floor for said object.
