What are you told when you say you don't have a vehicle? Do they not want you as a customer?
A few years ago, the NFB took McDonald's to court because blind people couldn't get food at night when the restaurants were closed and only the drive-through part was still open. I think they're also doing something about drive-through COVID-19 testing.

I think you could claim it was discrimination, since you were refused service because of your disability.

I placed an order on the chick fil a app and chose curbside. The closest option I had was saying I was on a bicycle. At least there was was that. At Wendy’s they let me inside. KFC actually allowed me to walk up to the drive through window to place my order. I stepped back to let a cat go after I placed my order. A crew member brought my food out. I just worry about getting in trouble for eating on the sidewalks/parking areas at these places since here’s no dine in allowed here. Of course, I usually have my folded ID cane with me so I guess they don’t really bother me because of that.

Drive up testing is frying my okra, right now. They've been turning people away if they walk up. People riding buses would like a test, too, tyvm.
I just can't wait til my yearly physical where my provider wants me to wait in my car for a text before I can step up to the entrance for screening. We aren't allowed to leave our cars til that text. Well, I'm sure the city bus won't mind waiting, right? I dread the signage, the annoyed side comments. The new people corrals and rearranged entrances and exits are a freaking picnic, too. No idea how they're handling walk-in labs.
And another thing... How bout that plexiglass between my face and every debit card scanner on the planet?
Guess I have more than okra in my skillet, huh.
I feel for anyone trying to teach their guide about social distancing.

Yes! I had to take my son to the dentist and they said “our waiting room is closed so we’ll have to ask you to stay in your vehicle and we’ll call you to come in.” I said “we’re walking there. We’ll be on foot.” She said that’s fine. When we got there we sat outside the door in a shaded area. We came in after a questionnaire so they cooks take out temps. I instantly said “this kinda isn’t fair. We’ve been sitting outside in the hot sun.” Luckily we passed the temp gun scan.
The plexiglas thing happened to me. I went to insert my debit card and pressed the wrong button. Had to start over. Luckily my son was with me and read the screen to me.

Just got an e-mail from my dentist office with the whole "wait in your vehicle" schpeel. No information on whether or not it'd be OK to bike or walk there and stand in the parking lot to wait for the temperature test. Guess I'll be holding off going the dentist for awhile. Typical fucking United States and its dumb fucking car culture. Wished I could live in another country since like age 14 when everyone in class started going on about getting their drivers license. Any country that where non-drivers aren't second class citizens. There isn't a damn thing anyone with any disability preventing them from obtaining a drivers license can do either. No one gives a shit about non-drivers living in a country where driving is a NECESSITY 99.9% of the time.

Basically. I try to be independent. My bf has a car but I feel bad when he takes me places. Yet it should be be such a damn hassle getting somewhere. He’s been to japan and they’ve got their infrastructure right. Most people there don’t drive. Meanwhile we’re lucky if a place caters to bicycles.
I moved to New Mexico from TN. a deciding factor was the weather, ease of getting around the city, it’s bike friendly and you don’t need a drivers license for a motorized bicycle here. I’ve had a motorized bicycle for 5+ years and it really helps me be independent when I’m able to go places on my own.

I've always been as autonomous as possible. I am hesitant to bus to appts, but I'll do it because I need them. Spouse is NOT with this program. I've been informed that discretionary time will be used but there are a LOT of upcoming appts and not so much DT. Besides, I'm a stronger canary than others and these offices need to remember we exist.
I'm a speed demon. I like the idea of a motorized bike but would likely hug something with it.

Call them and ask. Demand an accommodation. You could be the first to do so and discover others who need the same accommodations OR you could find they've already been chewed on and have a solution.

My local Co op has a hot bar that is the bomb. They also have signage I can read if I'm leaning against the counter with ingredients and everything. It's been closed for months. Last time I was in, it was open!! I saw the new windows and lack of signs and heard a squeak from somewhere. Turns out, customers are no longer allowed to come near the area. They get to tell an employee what they want and get it served to them. She was very sweet but I was unprepared. I'd have to grill her on ingredients lists and how do you know how much you're getting without handling the container? Padding it back and forth contaminates us both. She had nowhere to wash hands and I have no proof she's negative never mind whatever I'm harboring. I panicked and nearly ran away. Gone are the days when I could quietly decide if a food was safe and then dish it myself.
Their salad bar was all in labeled, sealed containers, too. I can't read those without picking each one up. Ah, the germs, I could share! I'm not comfortable with that. They haven't worked out store assistants, yet, either but still, being a label nazi is life or death for me. How much do I trust these peopleeven if they are willing?
So, I high-tailed it outta there but the delicious smells! I'll be back. Probably have to swig the yerba mate before going in but if I'm hungry enough... Co op kale... Rice/beans... No moo lasagna!! Maybe lunch, today?
Little steps, precious people. If we each take one or two, we'll collectively get big things done.

I don't blame you for being irritated by this. I was wondering about drive-through testing, which seems to be the only thing available in some places. I am sighted but neither drive nor have a car.

Once, a bus driver asked me for my drivers licence when I crossed the border from Denmark to Sweden. (It was for identification) I said: “Excuse me, I’m visually impaired and I’m also only 16!” The bus driver felt really sorry and apologised over and over again!
CloudyBeep7 points3y ago
In my country, when you want to watch a movie with audio description at the movie theater, you have to provide some sort of identification because the receivers are quite expensive. When I went a few months ago, the person at the ticket counter was rather surprised that I didn't give them a driver's license.

Oh I so wish there were anything like Doordash or Uber Eats or Instacart around here. But of course, Alabama is always behind every other state.
donottouchthatbrl2 points3y ago
I haven’t heard that yet but I also haven’t been in a grocery since early february, other stores since way before that. Instacart, deesh, amazon... and a shared shopping list so my other half sometimes orders stuff or drives to do the shopping or pickup without me. And weirdly enough I’m ok with this. No stress of people getting too close or figuring how to ask for shopping help
