I’m visually impaired (nystagmus, ROP, retinal scarring, etc). I have an ID cane I sometimes carry around. I keep it folded up and I feel awkward using it. Most people don’t know the difference and assume I’m totally blind (I have to wear sunglasses outside due to light sensitivity.) Advice? (self.Blind)

basicly suck it up and learn to be comfortable with your blindness. No one really cares that your blind. THeir too focused on their own stuff to care if your using a cane or wearing sunglasses.

Don't worry about people, just be natural and be yourself

Blindness is a spectrum. It's annoying when people seem to make comments implying they caught me faking blindness, but I use the opportunity to educate them - less than 10% of blind people have no vision whatsoever, most people have at least some level of light perception, it's a spectrum. And even if I didn't have any usable vision I could still use my smartphone, geez.

Best of luck to you, people are something else.

As others have said, don't too much about what others are thinking about you. Concentrate on getting around and taking care of you.

There’s really no other way around brute forcing it. Trust me, I’ve tried

Yeah, well put. Brute force! If it won't go, push harder! No surrender! They can take our lives, but they'll never take our freed... oh right that's Braveheart.

You don’t ever have to explain yourself to someone and anyone who responds in a negative way isn’t worth your time or energy. I use mine purely as an ID can as well, I use it when it suits my needs. Although, I had a really hard time being seen with it when I was younger. Now, I recognize that my physical safety far outweighs anyone else’s “comfort” or crappy thoughts.

Why does it bother you if people think you’re totally blind?
