How to gain more confidence in using a cane?(self.Blind)
submitted by freeavocadoess
Hello all! I am a legally blind college student who has been teetering on the edge of if I should use my cane more.
I'm completely blind in one eye and shotty vision in the left so my depth perception can be kind of wack sometimes. I still wear glasses and I can see a decent amount 20/120 but with the cane its just more comfortable if I need to ask help to see something. At the same time my vision is good enough that I can walk around for the most part with no issue and so when people see me without my cane I feel like they think i'm faking my vision. Don't know what to do. Should i invest in an ID cane, doubt it will help since most people don't know the difference but it will be lighter to carry around i guess? Eh just very self conscious

Read the Care and Feeding of the White Cane. Its a short and informative book. How's your vision at night when you are outside?

I have a friend who can probably see more than you, and at night she loses the majority of her vision. She would make all kind of escuses not to go out at night. She became a college student and soon realized that she was scrued because soon most of her courses were at night, gatherings and parties happened at night, and because she worked, most of her erens had to be done later in the day. Training on the use of the cane helpped her very much.

Once you hit someone in the shew for now moving, you'll realize the power you wield. Do not fear the staff of vision. People part the way like your Moses parting the seas. Its amazing. Lol Also I should add that I'm complete blind, but I can feel it. People move like your a truck going down the road with a thousand pounds of freight in the bed. Its fantastic. Jokes aside though, it shows people your blind before you walk into someone and seem like your just somebody who isn't watching where your going. And you will detect stairs and such and not fall.

you’ll get more confident by using it. there’s no other way. If available, you can try to find o & m instructors to help you.

I second what others have said, but be sure you get some mobility training. Learning the proper skills will make using your cane safer . If you have already had the training. then just start using it.
