Low vision and social distancing? (self.Blind)
submitted by noaimpara
I was wondering how other people were dealing with it.

I have a serious lack of depth perception and respecting the 6 feet distance is a nightmare to deal with as I just can’t see how far or how close I am to anything. Hell, I can’t even see 6 feet into the distance anyway. Maybe it wouldn’t be so bad if I had a white cane but I left it at my appartment and I’m quarantined at my parents’ house.

So how are you guys dealing with it? Anyone else has similar struggles?

Don't worry Guide dogs are having the same problem no one trained them to social distance.

Broom stick handle will work as a temp white cane. My dad could not find his one day and used a mop to make his way to shops and back.

I didn’t even think about guide dogs but that’s true that must be difficult to get used to!!

Thanks for the advice!!

Go get your cane, if possible.
I’m a guide dog user mainly, but because of social distancing I’ve been carrying my white cane, fully extended, in my right hand to make it plainly evident that I am blind and therefore won’t be able to keep social distance. Works well.

I usually live a solid hour drive away from my parents (or two hours on public transport that’s closed atm) so it’s not that easy but i’ve arranged to for my dad to drive me there in about a week just so I can get my cane back. I hope it’ll fix the issues I’ve been having.

How has your guide dog been adjusting to social distancing?

Well, with school being relegated to remote learning and with my trying to avoid being out unless absolutely necessary… I feel bad for him. He’s used to way more stimulation. We still go out for walks around the neighborhood so he doesn’t get rusty or gain weight but it’s not the same.
He seems happy, though. 😎🐶

that’s a really good idea. I haven’t thought of carrying a cane with me since I am a guide dog user as well, but I could see how that could be helpful.

Oh thank you for posting this! I have poor vision so I often mess this up. When I notice I say "excuse me" and back off. One thing that has been challenging is that my supermarket now has directional arrows on the floor and it constantly seems I'm going the wrong way. So far I have not had any negative reactions but I am also wearing a mask so that may make it better.

I do the exact same thing! I’ll be living life and then realize I’m too close to someone and I just go like "oh I’m so sorry!" or the person will notify me and then it’s even more embarrassing. I also can’t deal with arrows at all, I must be cursed or something because i am NEVER on the right path. A guy actually started yelling at me about it earlier today which made me post this haha.
