Has anyone checked out how accessible Funimation is? I see that the iTunes reviews aren’t very good… So if sighted people are complaining I’m afraid to see how bad my voiceover would handle it… But I really want to get into anime

Definitely! I absolutely love the music, voice acting, and sometimes very strange use of sound effects in Japanese animated shows and movies! Although I admit I’m lucky to still have some color/light sensitivity. For example one of my favourite shows was Steven universe so I would sit directly in front of my TV on a stool and basically have my nose pressed onto the screen and I could keep up with what’s going on on the screen just because it was so freaking colourful LOL
First I looked into Crunchyroll but it sounds like there’s only subtitles… So that doesn’t really help me out much. But on the Funimation subscription service it says that all most or all shows have DVBBS included. So I am super tempted to subscribe to it but I don’t know if the app is a complete mess or not, and if it is would I be able to work around the website instead? All things I’m trying to figure out

You could try it for a month. But let us know if it has audio description and if the app is accessible.

Bad news everyone. The Funimation app is a complete nightmare to try and use with a screen reader. Basically what happens when I try to swipe through the main screen is

The only way I actually got through to watch an episode of something was tapping the search bar which is one of the very few things that are even kind of labeled. And then I thought of the most generic anime… My hero academia. Search that and thank God it was the only thing that popped up so I tapped on button, and with my light vision I just kept pressing on pictures until I heard episode one and somehow managed to get it to play and it started in English! But then I tried to double tap the screen to see the controls and try and cast it to my TV but double tapping did absolutely nothing… So sad to say that the app has a complete no go if you use screen readers to navigate your phone.
However my next step, since I made a free account, is to go to the website and see if that is any better! Hopefully I’ll edit this in a little bit and let you know how it goes.

Some of your comments about Netflix are inaccurate.
Some foreign-language originals have AD in multiple languages, and sometimes they have AD in English but not the original language.
AD is rarely region-locked. The most common cause for region-locking is whether particular countries designate a title as being a Netflix original. Almost everything that has AD in the US has AD everywhere else.

Interesting. I have only seen this in two movies and one documentary so far.

That is true. I think, especially, when it comes to Netflix originals, audio description is available globally.
One thing, I would like to add, is the fact, that Netflix is the only service, that produces their audio description in 5.1, while the audio description of every other service is only in stereo. I know, that might not make much of a difference for most of you, but I think, it is really nice. And I kind of wish, others would do that too.

• Airplane Mode: Brazilian Portuguese, English and Spanish
• Money Heist: Spanish, English and Brazilian Portuguese
• Elite: Spanish, English and Brazilian Portuguese
• Narcos and Narcos Mexico: English and Spanish
• All four series of Criminal have AD in English, French, German and Spanish.
• Dark: German and English
• How to sell drugs online fast: German and English
• We are the wave: German and English
• A few anime titles have AD in Japanese and English.
• the Mighty Little Bheem series: Hindi and English

Wow! Thanks for the list. I wasn’t aware, that Netflix added more description tracks to their shows. I was always under the assumption, that Netflix would only produce audio description for the native spoken language the show is in.

Most of the time, that is the case. However, most of these shows and movies have a substantial part of the dialogue in another language. Many of the others are also popular with English-speaking audiences.

I enjoy podcasts, but if I'm looking for scripted entertainment, I prefer TV, both pre-audio description and now. Podcasts for me are more for conversational shows, interviews, etc.
