App to Help the Visually Impaired (self.Blind)
submitted by ayaanzhaque
Hey everyone! A couple of friends have made an app called Tickbird, which allows visually impaired patients to aurally understand their prescriptions and medicine bottle labels simply by taking pictures of them. If you or anyone you know anyone that could use this app, please recommend it - it's completely free! We also suggest everyone regardless of whether you are visually impaired or not to download it and try it out - we would always appreciate feedback from anyone.

The app is currently available at $1

And our website is here: $1

I’m an assistant to an additive technology trainer, and I do testing with these kinds of things before we recommend to clients. If I wish to give feedback, where can I post it? Thanks!

Hi this is really great. You can contact me: ayaanzhaque@gmail.com, rvignav@gmail.com, or you could just post any feedback in this thread. Thanks!

Is this designed for a specific country? The demo video is the US: is there a standard scrip format for the States?

Also having the audio guidance is hugely annoying if you're a VoiceOver user, and the demo video is pretty much useless for the totally blind without that on. The most difficult part of the whole process - capturing the proscription image - isn't shown to be accessible. My question on an initial viewing would be how a blind person titles the picture without it being read first?

finally people will want to know why they have to put a bunch of medical data into your app, where it goes and if if it doesn't, why it needs to be there?

Hi, thanks for your concerns!
Not sure what you mean by standard scrip format for the states, but we live in California and I’m not sure why our app wouldn’t work in any state or country.

In terms of Audio guidance, voiceover would only tell the user where buttons are and things like that, we are just giving general information and whenever you switch tabs the instructions are turned off.

In terms of the scanning, we did some research but correct me if I am wrong, blind people have a general understanding of their surroundings, and per our research, Apple accessibility tells users what their camera sees and if it is a rectangle or not. Lastly, if al else fails, if the image is illegible, it would ask you to retake. A user should be able to title their medicine because they know what medicine they need to take, just not the details and such.

In terms of medical data, we are connected to a database which is password protected, which means that no one can view it except you. The information is just to keep there, it doesn’t play a big role, but we would advice that you use the app and tell your doctor about it so they are more connected.
