How to train one eye (self.Blind)
submitted by Emms246
Hi r/blind! I have nystagmus and was born with a lazy left eye. I got an operation around 8 years ago as a child but as I get older I realise that it really didn't make too much of a difference. Whist in lockdown I've been trying to train my left eye but because I have nystagmus, covering one eye and trying to focus with the weaker one gives me migraines and fatigue. I'm wondering if there's another way to effectively train my left eye without these side effects.

Patching is hard when you have nystagmus because you’re never supposed to cover up the eye. You’re supposed to “fog” it. Covering it makes shaking worse. Try some type of transparent tape over your glasses.

I’ve had 4 eye muscle surgeries for my nystagmus:

The first surgery was to move my eyes up to center my null point.

The second surgery was an experimental horizontal tenotomy which had little success.

The last two were to fix the 15° tilt in my right eye from surgery.

During the healing process of the last two, I unintentionally ignored my right eye. The vision in my right eye got significantly worse and my left eye got significantly better because I was “forced to use it”.
Strangely, my null point also shifted to the top left corner of my left eye.
My ophthalmologist was hesitant to do any more surgeries as it could compromise the blood flow to my eyes.

Thanks for the advice. I was beginning to get concerned about my constant headaches. I don't think my way of training them is doing any good

Chronic headaches are common with nystagmus.
Your brain is working way more than the average person to see things and to keep them still. It’s a huge strain.

Talk to your ophthalmologist. They're probably doing zoom sessions, emails, or phone calls. Emails are usually free 💁

I'm a bit lost regarding this. I've been discharged from the hospital so I no longer see an opthalmologist. What can I do about this? I live in the UK

You should still have an eye specialist that you see annually for your condition. Talk to them. Please do not patch or treat yourself without medical guidance.

If you do not have an optical specialist then you need to get one. I'm unfamiliar with the UK health system but you should be able to get a referral from your primary doctor if needed.

Good to know. I dont see a specialist anymore but after lockdown I'll speak with my doctor. Thanks :D

My guess is you find out as much as you wish to about blindness, technology, etc. and share it with them, as needed basis
