What do you prefer, Typing or Dictation? (self.Blind)
submitted by Carnegie89
I've always typed whatever I wanted to write. Recently, I installed Dragon NaturallySpeaking. Don't know which one is faster yet.

Typing. On both phones and computers.
MakihikiMalahini-who 3 points 3y ago
Same. I try to avoid typing as much as possible on my phone though.

I use braille screen input. I'm using it to type this comment.
Sagar5786 7 points 3y ago
I second this, definitely heavy braille screen input user here

I have an irrationally bad time with dictation on everything. Like, my voice isn't particularly high or deep, I have a very neutral accent, people say they can't hear my speech impediment at all, but for some reason, every single voice to text I've used has had huge issues with how I speak. It's given me a tiny bit of a complex, to be honest.

I've also been typing for the better part of 20 years, though, so my speed is quick enough that I don't feel like dictation could be faster.

Personally, I prefer typing because I can type really fast. I’ve never used any dictation software though except the built in dictation mechanism on the iPhone keyboard. Plus, with dictation, I feel like I am slower because I need to hesitate a bit in order to form sentences correctly in my head before speaking them. Meanwhile, while typing, I feel like I can edit on the fly much faster and the delay in time it takes me to type the words allows my thoughts to complete the sentence correctly.

Excellent observation. I feel the same.
retrolental_morose 3 points 3y ago
Typing for me too.
I'd imagine the average age of those on this sub grew up learning a keyboard rather than a touchscreen though. I took typing lessons as a child. Now one of the most valuable things I learned. I've not formally assessed my speed in 25 years but it's good enough to keep me working.

On my phone I dictate my texts but on my laptop I type

Typing. Using braille screen input now and type pretty fast on a computer. I don't like dictation cause your broadcasting what your typing to everyone around you, not very discreet. Might as well call who your talking to at that point lol.

I would strongly caution against using dictation with speech as your only method of verification. If you're just chatting with family and friends, then who cares. But I've seen a few people use it in a professional setting, and it's incredibly off-putting. Homonyms are a thing, and very difficult to avoid with dictation, unless you are using braille to verify, instead of speech.

I'm trying to develop content for an ebook and an online course. I needed a fast and effective way to get all my thoughts down to be edited at a later date.

I like typing. I'm not that fast but can manage around 60 wpm. A friend of mine suggested using Dragon. I'm going to test it for a few days. If it doesn't exceed my typing speed, I'll go back to typing.

I prefer typing on the PC, I am very fast at it. On the phone usually I type either with the keyboard or braille, or when I'm too lazy I just dictate whatever I'm trying to type. I use Android for reference.

Let me know how the Dragon software goes! I've got an installation lying somewhere on the PC, have wanted to try it out never gotten the chance though.

*For computer use.*

Typing.

The problem with the strong dictation push is that you get a bunch of blind people that don't know basic spelling and grammar rules. Just another problem to add on to the blind community. This is kind of like not teaching a blind person braille.

Furthermore, typing can be quicker, if your dictation software makes mistakes. And don't forget, the people around you *and* your phone can hear to what you're saying, so unless you're by yourself, dictation removes *all* privacy.

With that said, I've been touch typing since second or third grade... so yeah, I might not be the ideal person to talk about this.

I choose typing over dictation because I think I would stumble too much in my speech and have to constantly edit in either case and at least with typing the errors are always mine rather than half mine half machine.
EmmePhoenix12 1 points 3y ago
I prefer to type.
TimeLily 1 points 3y ago
Ideally typing but sometimes dictation is easier, especially when typing a long message/paragraph. I've always been bad at using braille screen input tho
Caxctus- 1 points 3y ago
I prefer typing as sometimes my speech to text (not sure how it's called) will write the wrong thing for me. Example, I will say shadow, speech to text or whatever its called will write sad ow.
Edit: It seems as though the public calls it voice over.
codeplaysleep 1 points 3y ago
Typing, by far.

I'll sometimes use dictation on mobile if I need to send a giant, paragrah-sized text message, but that has nothing to do with my vision.
Marconius 1 points 3y ago
I type at 160WPM on a keyboard when using a laptop or desmktop, and that's much faster than dictation, especially when having to go back and fix errors. On my iPhone, I pretty much only use braille screen input to type. The braille shorthand makes typing a breeze, whether when writing out a long post or sending a short message, and again is much more accurate than dictation plus requires less error management.
Carnegie89 [OP] 1 points 3y ago
160 wpm. Damn, that's fast. That's some kind of world record.
Marconius 2 points 3y ago
I did a shit ton of Mavis Beacon and Mario Teaches Typing when I was a kid, and I'm a pianist and a major computer geek, so it all just worked together to increase my speed over the years :)
bscross32 1 points 3y ago
On PC typing. On mobile, if dictation actually worked, I'd use it, but I am using BSI. I am not good at braille so it's slower, but better than touch screen typing.
midnight-muffins 1 points 3y ago
Typing all the way. Dictation is too slow for me
dunktheball 1 points 3y ago
I honestly haven't tried anything other than typing yet because I am just so used to it after so many years of constantly typing. I probably should try alternatives also, though.
modulus 1 points 3y ago
Typing on the computer, but mobile data entry is so annoying I dictate on the phone. I would much rather use the computer than the phone though.
CloudyBeep 2 points 3y ago
Do you know braille? If so, try Braille Screen Input.
modulus 2 points 3y ago
I do no braille, but I'm not sure how that's supposed to work... placing the fingers in the right spots, etc. I'll try it though, thanks for the recommendation.
CloudyBeep 2 points 3y ago
Some people take to it more naturally than others. Try both tabletop and screen away mode. I prefer screen away mode. I haven't measured my speed, but it would be above 30 words per minute. Let me know if you have any questions.
blind_cowboy 2 points 3y ago
I am still trying to get used to Braille input mode. I'll use it for a day or 2 then forget about it when I get in a hurry. I am using it right now though.

I prefer typing.
