Help my abuelita? (self.Blind)
submitted by gldnpothos
My abuela has recently gone partially blind due to her chronic illness. She isn’t able to read text on a book and I want to know if any of you know a way I can help her learn to read in Braille, in Spanish of course, because that’s the only language she speaks. The problem is, I don’t know where to get started and any resources to look at nor do I know how to read Braille. Any suggestions?

You should contact blindness organizations. If you live in the US, I'm sure that they will have people who can teach her Spanish braille. However, I don't think libraries for the blind in the US have large collections in Spanish.

A better option is for her to learn to use technology like an iPad with accessibility tools. Again, blindness organizations would be the best people to help you with this. She could get audio books using technology.

Yess! I was thinking of getting her audio books and an iPad instead because she didn’t seem too willing to learn Braille and she really enjoys hearing books more. Thank you!

Braille might seem like the answer, and is a fantastic tool to have at your disposal if your Abuela is motivated to learn, but there are other things she can learn which may not seem so overwhelming and can give her access to lots of reading options. Sometimes older people have a huge mental block when it comes to learning braille. The fight to convince them it’s worth it isn’t always the hill you want to die on unless they have already decided that’s something they want for themselves.
Screen readers have Spanish options and would allow your Abuela to make phone calls, text, search the internet and listen to books, all in Spanish.
Audio books have Spanish options depending on where you are located. At my organization in particular, one of our instructors is fluent in Spanish and would be able to help your grandmother with all sorts of independent living tasks to help her be successful without vision.

I was requesting personal information. I provided some input in private with the information received. It would not be right to ask and receive private information in the general feed.
