actually lost vision after cataract surgery (self.Blind)
submitted by Mayvry1
Hi! I have no idea if this is the right place or if anyone can help me. I'm twenty and was born three months premature. I had ROP and lost full vision in one eye and have a 15 degree field of vision and 20/70 acuity in the other. I had scleral buckle surgery on both eyes as a baby. When I was 12 I developed a cataract on my good eye, got the surgery to replace my lens, they said they couldn't get a perfect reading of my eye (turns out i have a large blindspot I didn't know about so I was looking into the machine wrong without knwoing) so they put the best fit lens they could on me. My vision improved to 20/50! This doesn't sound like a lot but it was awesome. Over the next 1-2 years my vision slowly went back to 20/70 in that eye, I got my eye checked out and nothing was wrong and they don't know what's up. Stayed the same ever since. Anyone have a similar experience? The thing that sucks is I had pretty good up close vision and bad far away vision, so my parents comvinced me to get a lens that would "fix" my distance vision but make my close up not as good because I could use reading glasses, instead that lasted only briefly and now I can't read normal print either, so that is a bummer. Overall just confused and been thinming about it lately.

hi, what is your question? We can't provide medical advice here, but there's people who have experienced similar situations as you.
Without knowing what kind of education and training you've received, I would encourage to obtain blindness rehab training at a place like the Louisiana Center for the Blind or the Colorado Center for the Blind.

I don’t really have anything to say besides this kind of happenned to me too if you wantvto relate.
Mayvry1 [OP] 2 points 3y ago
huh, what was your situation?
noaimpara 1 points 3y ago
I have a very fragile eye, the cataract surgery caused high pressure for some reason and I just lost sight in that eye.

Omg are you me? I'm 19 I was also born three months premature and have ROP. They tried the scaleral buckles and laser surgery on both eyes when I was born to try and save my retina from detaching but things didn't turn out great. I'm completely blind in my left eye and have 20/100 vision in my right eye. The left eye has a cataract and calcium build up but it's been stable for years and my doctor thinks there's no point in risking things and doing the removal surgery if I can't see out of the eye anyway. I'm not sure what my visual field is in my good right eye but they were able to save my central vision although my peripheral vision is mostly gone. I can still read normal sized font OK, like 12 or 14 point font. It sucks having no depth perception and stairs are an issue for me.

I was born at 25 weeks gestation, and spent 3 months in the NICU where I experienced complications of:

-Retinopathy of prematurity due to 100% oxygen toxicity.
-Tension pneumothorax due to perforating my lung while intubated in the NICU.
-Disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC).
-Necrotizing enterocolitis, probably exasperated by the DIC.
-A colostomy, had a stoma bag for 6 months until the DIC and NEC got better and my colon could be anastomosed.
-Had my colon resectioned.
-Thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP).
-I have the Thalassemia minor E trait.
-I have very minor cerebral palsy.

oh wow VERY similar situation, I was born at 24 weeks i believe? Aside form my vision my only long lasting complication is asthma from underdeveloped lungs. Although they did almost have to amputate my left leg when my circulation got cut off as a baby. I also had a hole in my heart but it closed.

Cool! I also have a hole in my heart that closed. Thankfully I have no respiratory problems.

Hey, I also have ROP. I had a lens surgery in 2017 to reduce pressure caused by glaucoma. When my vision would worsen, it was either the lens being dirty, and at worst, my retina beginning to detach. Not saying that’s going to happen to you, but it might be worth checking it out :)

Thanks, I have heard my stitches are very slightly loose a while ago (so every once in a while my lens "bounces" so I imagine that has something to do with it. It's been eight years so I hope my retina's been keeping her shit together haha, I think I'll have to get a replacmenet lens someday (fingers crossed they can get me a better fitting one and the surgery will go well) eye stuff is scary. What did you do to fix your lens being dirty?
CosmicBunny97 1 points 3y ago
That’s super strange. Mine was like an artificial lens, and they cleaned it through lasers. It wasn’t painful or anything.
Mayvry1 [OP] 1 points 3y ago
oh see they did that for me too but nothing changed? Mine's an artifical lens too, I believe you can't keep the natural one after cataracts.
CosmicBunny97 1 points 3y ago
Yup, that’s true. All I can recommend is to go to your ophthalmologist. I’m sure they can do something, or refer you to someone who can help more.
