Instagram captions (self.Blind)
submitted by pudursykurrr
Hi! I’m sighted and made an instagram account for my partner’s Guide Dog, my partner is an old fart who doesn’t use social media so I can’t tell what my captions sound like on voiceover, and also would prefer to ask about your personal preferences:

If you’re blind/partially sighted and use instagram regularly, do you prefer to have image descriptions in the caption of the photo or to have the image description in the alt text option?

Which is easier to navigate/use?

Also unfortunately instagram captions are terrible with formatting so in order to make paragraphs you have to use emojis (makes voiceover annoying) or stupid full stops (.) and the return key so sighted folk can read them, Molly Burke does this in her captions (as well as other “influencers”) to make the captions look cleaner and not just a huge block of text.

My third question is: does using full stops in that way make it harder to understand what’s being written for people using voiceover?

If anyone has the time to answer my questions that would be really appreciated, as the account is intended for blind/partially sighted people to enjoy.

Thanks so much!

I am blind and have an Instagram account for my guide dog as well as a personal one. I still use the spacing using the return key and generally use the alt text feature on the photo. If you don’t mind sharing, what’s the handle ?

It’s @gaurtheguidedog. If you have the time I’d love to hear your opinions about the formatting of the captions, and if it would be more accessible to use the alt text.

OK, just followed. The account and formatting looks good, but I don’t speak that language LOL

Thanks! I think going forward I’m going to just use english, as voiceover sucks in our language, and when we text eachother we use english anyway so it’s easier for my partner to understand.
