Hi! Sighted person here with a question(self.Blind)
submitted by i-need-asistance
How do you feel when someone (for instance playing a video game) says “omg I’m blind” when missing an obvious enemy? I saw a tweet today that compared that to using the r-word and I was wondering what y’all think!

I can understand how someone could arrive at that conclusion. Swap the r word for the word blind in the sentence in your post and you can see someone who’s not sensitive to disability saying something like that. Personally, I wouldn’t get in a huff or anything if someone referred to themselves as blind in that context. The only time the usage of the word blind mildly bugs me is when people equate being blind with stupidity For example, if you don’t recognize that rain falls from the sky, you must be blind. Like only blind people are stupid enough to not recognize such obvious things. Even then, I usually just roll my eyes and say nope, even blind people recognize it too lol. Also, just because it doesn’t bother me, doesn’t mean it won’t offend everyone in the blind community. We are not a monolith.
Also, a key difference between the word blind and the r word is their usage within their respective communities. In general, blind people spend much of their time reassuring sighted people that it’s okay to refer to us as blind and that it’s how we describe ourselves. All of our major organizations have the word blind in the title. That’s not at all the case with the r word.
I think it ultimately comes down to historical context. People don’t use blind as an insult in the same way they have used the r word as an insult. Would I prefer if that person just used the word stupid to describe themselves missing that enemy instead of the word blind? Yeah probably. Do I think them using the word blind is equally offensive as the r word? Not really.

Thank you for your personal input! That all makes a lot of sense 😄

I’d probably laugh and say something like “ha, relatable”. Life’s too short to take silly little comments like that seriously imo

Depends on context. In your context, I don't mind too much. I actually find the little apology scramble they do when they realize that I'm around a bit funny. Sometimes I'll call them out on it in a playful or joking manner. If someone is using it to insult, then the verbal knives come out.
i-need-asistance [OP]1 points3y ago
Okay, cool! Thank you!

Really, really doesn’t bother me at all. The only time that someone using the word blind in a figurative way would offend me is if that was their intention. It hardly ever is, so I really don’t care. My sense of humour is quite dry — typical Brit —, so sometimes I have to watch the blind jokes, especially if I’m around people who have recently lost their sight/who are sensitive about their visual impairment.

Thank you so much for your input!

I personally care,0 out of 10
ukifrit3 points3y ago
I think it's a bit ableist, isn't it? Being blind doesn't mean you don't know where stuff is
Kylefornicationn3 points3y ago
I mean, it kind of does lol
i-need-asistance [OP]2 points3y ago
Yeah, I kinda agree
rory-games2 points2y ago
In that context it doesn't bother me. But "blind faith", "blindly <doing something>", "was blind enough to miss/was blind enough to/etc", no thanks.
On the other hand, it is too deeply rooted in language for there to be any use trying to stop people from using it, and you'll just end up pissing people off after a while if you tell everyone not to use it.

I don't play a lot of video games, however I don't get offended by people using the term "blind" as an expression. I am surprised that "deaf" isn't used more, but what can one do?
The thing that really irks and annoys me though is people calling themselves O.C.D. or autistic when they are not and using that as a joke, because when someone is blind it's obvious but those other disabilities are hidden so one would not know if the person were being serious or not.
Faelinna2 points3y ago
I'm legally blind and a video game player and that doesn't bother me at all. I don't think it's ableist.
noaimpara2 points3y ago
I really don’t care about people using blind figuratively (like, "oh I missed my shot, am I blind or what", or "you’re blind to his feelings"). I fail to see how it could ever be compared to the r word. Like I lost my sight later in life and I’d say I’m pretty damn sensitive (for exemple, sighted people who wear glasses and call themselves blind get on my nerve), but this… not offensive.

It doesn’t bother me at all.

So I'm against PC language and culture for many reasons, but what comes to mind in this situation is critical thinking. That ability to analyze a situation and determine what was meant.

Context is the key to understanding whether someone really meant to be offensive or not. Let's say someone was out with his friends practicing skating. They try for a kickflip but wipe out and send the board flying. One of their buddies makes a comment like, "Haha, you looked like a retard", or, "Damn, that was retarded". At surface level, there doesn't seem to be anything wrong with that. Now, if the person in question thought they were laughing at them instead of good-natured ribbing between friends, then they'd probably be offended, and rightfully so. But if I was a neutral observer, what business would it be of mine to comment on it?

Where I will take offense and where I will definitely be having words with people is if they make fun of, or light of someone with mental deficits. Especially if they can't defend themselves because they really don't understand what's going on. If I was friends with a person or group of people like that, I wouldn't be for long.

This blind thing is much the same way. I know a good many blind people who don't mind blind related jokes, and who will even use self deprecating humor as it relates to their blindness. A decent person will respect someone's preferences if they don't like blind jokes. But yeah, in general, if you're joking around and you shout something like, "Hey, are you blind or something?", and you're not being obnoxious about it - as in doing it all the time - I would say that people will be OK with it. Again, if someone's not, respect that and refrain from doing it.

Then there's the more general usage of the word blind that I really cannot understand the nature of it's perceived offense. I'm talking about phrases such as, "Blind spot", and others. Wee don't' have domain over that; not at all.

To sum up, it's generally not offensive, and if you think it might be, just ask the person in question. We're not so maladjusted that we take every use of the word 'blind' as a perceived slight against us. That would be silly, and counter-productive, as most of us really would like to bridge the gap between sighted and blind. We have differences, and we have to do things differently, but there is more in common there than may appear at first glance.

Thank you for your answer! That goes along with the majority of answers here, and is kind of what I thought when i first read the tweet, I just wanted to hear from actual blind people to make sure it wasn’t just a sighted person thing. Thanks again!

When I was in high school I took guitar lessons for a while. There was a song that used that line and my instrauctor said I hate when people say that. I was completely blank for atleast 5 seconds then had to ask what he was talking about. Obviously it doesn't bother me.
i-need-asistance [OP]1 points3y ago
Yeah, that seems to be the general consensus here, thank you for answering!
grinchnight142 points3y ago
If someone is just trolling and says something like "are you blind? Do you not see the score? I'm clearly beating you!", then I'm fine with it.
I've been watching way too many COD trolling videos, I think lol
i-need-asistance [OP]1 points3y ago
I said “wow I’m blind” today because I was playing valorant and died to an enemy 10 feet in front of me that was clearly on the screen when I turned the corner. I am not visually impaired or blind in any way.
grinchnight142 points3y ago
Someone needs to pay more attention when gaming lol
i-need-asistance [OP]1 points3y ago
I mean....yeahhhhhh lmao
grinchnight142 points3y ago
Try to actually kill the enomies this time lol
Kumandan12991 points3y ago
I don't feel anything, I don't think this is insulting in any way either.

Annoys me but I wouldn't start a war over it.

Anyone who's bothered by that stuff needs to find something better to do.
Just be aware it's quite possible to be blind and to be a bit of a moron (ask me how I know) and you are absolutely not required to just fold up and start apologising if anyone has a go at you about it. Words mean what you want them to mean, not what someone else needs them to mean in order to support some arbitrary level off offence.
