Do you ever find yourself getting concussions?(self.Blind)
submitted by something____wicked
Hi there, I'm a sighted person with occasional blindness due to a really nasty recurrent corneal abrasion, which every few months rears its ugly head and leaves me in terrible pain for several days, as well as blindness.
In these intervals, I find myself smacking into things constantly. I'm clumsy normally but not being able to see for these few days every few months means I'm constantly injuring myself. E.g. standing up from the toilet and somehow smacking my head into the towel rack.
Is this something blind people regularly encounter? Or have you become so aware of your surroundings and good at judging distance in your head that you most avoid it? Or does it just vary based on your natural degree of clumsiness like mine?

Not so long as people cut their damn hedges back. I'd write more but I have to go and spend some time in the bathroom untangling this bird's nest from my hair.

I’m very clumsy, have no sense of depth or distance, and I do hit myself on the head quite a lot. I’ve lost my sight about ~5 years ago now, but I still do. It especially happens when i throw myself on my bed, and my head violently hits the wall or the bed frame. Ouchie.

I hit my head pretty good a couple of times when I was a kid and didn't see something and I gave myself a mild concussion 10yrs ago, but that was because of my own stupidity and had nothing to do with my eyesight.
It's pretty rare that I hit my head these days.
Around the house and the places I go regularly, it's no problem. If I'm out in the woods or something, I wear a hat with a wide brim (also helps with ticks/spiders). If I'm walking alone through an unfamiliar area that seems to have a lot of low-hanging things, I'll keep a hand up. In general, though, friends/family I'm with will warn me if there's something.

Never had a concussion but then again, I’m too small to hit the towel rack. I’ve ran into doors a few times but not often

I got three concussions when I hiked the Appalachian Trail. Didn't catch that a tree had fallen across the trail and wacked them at full speed. The last one knocked me out for a few seconds. I always wear a hat. When the bill of my hat hits something I know to slow down. I'm tall so this is a regular thing for me. The hat doesn't stop all head contact but it helps.

Ooh, the hat's a clever idea. Congrats on finishing the Appalachian trail! Always been a dream of mine.

Thanks. It is hard with limited sight. I met the first guy to hike the trail with his seeing eye dog on my hike. Neat opportunity. He was presenting a speech in one of the towns as I was going through.

no! It happens once in a while when I'm particularly distracted, but never at home.
