Experiences with Freedom Scientific vs. Humanware customer service/tech support (self.Blind)
submitted by lil-alfalfa-sprout
I'm shopping around for Braille displays for a young student. Choosing a company with good tech support is important, because it is to be used for distance learning and the student is not yet proficient in Braille nor are his family. They have no experience with these types of devices so it's going to need to be something they can set up easily. I want them to be able to get good tech support if they have any issues.

If anyone could share their experiences with Humanware and Freedom Scientific tech support, I would really appreciate it.

I have used several varieties, and my experiences with Humanware have been positive, both with ease of use and customer service.

I had a particularly bad experience with a Freedom scientific product, but it's my understanding that this is not indicative of them usually.

In my opinion, go with Humanware, they have great customer service, fantastic products and don't constantly try to upsell you on their other products.

What was your bad experience with Freedom Scientific?

I was borrowing a braille display from a friend before buying one of my own. When I called for help with some functionality issues they essentially told me to shove it since I didn't use JAWS.

A lot of our students use humanware, and the help getting them working for distance was fairly easy. I'm sure someone could walk them through set up, but for a display without knowledge of braille, that might be tricky.

From what I've heard, they're fairly similar. I suggest not taking this into consideration when choosing a braille display.

I don’t have experience with both, just freedom scientific. They seem to be pretty solid in addressing individual concerns, and there is a lot more available in terms of resources for learning and troubleshooting their products than any other.

I have dealt with FreedomScientific's tech support about 2 or 3 times and every time has been great. They always seemed to know their stuff, and I got the help I needed.

Didn't know that about the resources. Sounds helpful in our situation.

FYI: I have bought braille note takers for my blind husband from time to time over years. I save my search on Ebay then look at items when they come up. Saves $. Get a backup unit.
