Undiagnosed Vision Problems Affecting Work (self.Blind)
submitted by Elaina_Bellingham
Hi Redditors,
For 5-7 weeks now I’ve been having growing vision problems. My eye doctor doesn’t know the cause and has referred me to a local university. I’m still waiting to be able to schedule but it normally takes a couple of months to get an appointment.

In the meantime, a new progression is affecting my ability to work. It comes and goes but I keep being unable to read. Sometimes the letters just blur too much, other times I can physically see the letters/numbers but I can’t process more than 2-3 at a time. When the latter happens, I’m disoriented, light bothers me, and I get headaches.

The reading problems are a major problem when they flare at work. I’m a customer service rep at a bridal salon and when it flares up I: can’t read the comments and phone numbers to make reminder calls, can’t check people in because I can’t find their appointments, I can’t take most phone calls because most involve looking stuff up on the computer, I can’t do receiving because I can’t read the screen to confirm I have the right stuff, and I can’t put dresses away because I can’t read the style numbers on the tags or placeholders to make sure they end up in the right spot. All of those tasks are 99.95% of my job.

Does anyone have any tips on how to work around this until I can get a diagnosis and get formal help? I need this job so I can pay for school in the fall. Any advice is appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Any tips on ways to keep my mind busy that don’t use my eyes? I have anxiety so not doing anything doesn’t bode well for me.

Thanks for the suggestions! Do you happen to know if sewing is considered a strain on the eyes? That’s been my main hobby as of late.

I completely understand the job market. I know anything like this can interfere with getting or holding a job. Luckily my managers have been pretty understanding so far.

Really press to get this looked at. You may need an MRI. Some tumors can press on the optic nerve. I have one on my pituitary and am on small dosage meds for life to keep it under control. I'm guessing it's not that though because you havent complained of a headache from something other than eyestrain. But you could use that concern to try to get them to give you as early appointments as possible.

I had an MRI of my brain earlier this week and it was normal. Then saw my eye doctor and they don’t know so they’re referring me to the eye institute at the local health sciences university but they said it can take a couple of months to get in.

Oh good. Well no worries there then. That part is a relief.

Just keep calling and asking if you van get in earlier. Ask for them to call you if there are earlier cancellations. One doctors office did this for me and I got a quick appointment after that.

Will do. Hopefully that happens for me too!

If it's seriously impacting your life as described, force the issue. Insist that you get in to see the specialist asap. New patient or not, they can make it happen. Double/over booking is common in specialists offices.

I’ll try when they call.

Just throwin this one out there... maybe you suffer from ocular migraines.

Just looked at that, the episodes last too long and I’m having other symptoms that aren’t described there. I only talked about the ones affecting work. Thanks though!

try being more specific with what it looks like.

Just an fyi, I get migraines, and they regularly last 8+hours at a time, I've had a few last over 14 hours.

The other symptoms aren’t really episodes like the reading is. I get dark spots and flashes of light. If I look at something directly, mostly small stuff, it’ll blur and disappear from my vision.

Interesting. And im guessing your eye doctor pressure tested your eyes, dialated your pupils and examined everything thoroughly, including your optic nerve? You should get a second opinion asap.

Have you already got an MRI and CAT scan of your brain? I suggest this right away if you havent. Could be a tumor, or some excess pressure in your brain.

Could also be a type of epilepsy.

Could also be completely stress or emotional trauma related, and psychosomatic.
