I got SuperNova installed today and I don’t know... (self.Blind)
submitted by wishiwasmegmccaffrey
I have used ZoomText since I was 6 years old and loved it.
Then one day a few months ago, the “computer guy” realised how old my ZoomText was and how it didn’t work with Google Chrome. So he told me about SuperNova. “It’s just like ZoomText except more modern and it works with Chrome,” he said.

So today he and another computer-person came to my house and deleted ZoomText and installed the latest version of SuperNova on my computer. He showed me how it worked and gave me a list with shortcuts to the program.

I don’t know what I’m thinking about it. The app-reader finally works with Chrome which is great and I love the cute little pictures in the menu! There are several things I don’t like with SuperNova, but it’s probably because it’s a new program and it’s not like I’m used to.

It annoys me that the shortcuts are different. I do the ZoomText-shortcuts by reflex and I’ve been annoyed several times today that things don’t work and then realising it’s a new program.
The cursor also annoys me a lot. The sizes are either too large or too small. It also changes size if I have 0 zoom.

My major issue is that I can’t open the menu if I have closed it. I’ve tried to click on the icon in the bottom of the screen, but it doesn’t work. My only way to find the menu again is to close the entire program and open it again.
And yes, I have tried to restart my computer several times.

What are your opinions on SuperNova? How did you make the “transition” from ZoomText to Supernova? Do you know the solution to my problems?

EDIT: Thanks for your help and advice everyone! I just want to make a few things more clear. I don’t use JAWS since it pisses me off. I used it as a kid but we uninstalled it since I didn’t need it and it just made me angry.
I can’t install things on the computer myself because 1) I’m not good at computers. 2) I’m not allowed to install things on my computer without the computer-guy being involved. I live in Sweden and thank’s to the Swedish taxpayers, all programs are free, I just need the computer-guy to install them for me.

Left CTRL+space will bring up the Supernova interface.

In terms of Windows magnification I can't judge. People are pretty evenly-split in the UK at least about which they prefer.

All the shortcuts can be remapped, and you can script both - probably adjusting the cursors could be done with some more technical knowhow.

Just get a new version of ZoomText (version 2020) or Fusion (which combines JAWS and ZoomText). If you're happy with something, you shouldn't need to change it, and personally I think ZoomText is better than Supernova.

Supernova is aweful. Try Fusion, which is Zoomtext and JAWS combined and updated. Its resource heavy but purportedly the best

Nah.

Don't use either program, Stick to the free and open source stuff.

is there a free magnifier that has the level of comparable range of tools for magnification that in the screen reader landscape NVDA does to JAWS?

If I'm going to be completely honest with you, I don't know the first thing about Jaws or NVDA.

Furthermore, everyone's needs are slightly different.

I think the better question is "what free or open source magnification tool has the appropriate tools for me?".

I've personally used the Windows magnifier since Windows 7, and I've never looked back, and because of the way Windows is built, I can easily modify things to meet my needs, that is, if a particular "feature" or "tool" doesn't exist, I'll just make it or find it.

If your in the US, you can even get the annual price for zoom text 2020 now and pay 64 bucks a year for it (including future upgrades) without having to pay anything up front.
Way overdo, and ridiculous that it's still only in the US but good none the less.

Try a demo of zoomtext. It’ll be the latest.
