Question for my GCSE DT project, Have you run into many problems when it comes to picking up mugs and glasses that sorely inconvenience you and what parts of it exactly would you say make it hard to do, if you do find difficulty? (self.Blind)

No. My hands work just fine.

Why would we have trouble picking up cups?

not so much for blind people. This would be more applicable to those with issues with fine motor skills.

I have found for some of my older clients, who have lost enough vision that they don't have depth perception and they have poor visual acuity, they have trouble judging how far away a cup is (especially a glass cup with water, so it is mostly transparent). So when they are reaching for it, they think it is farther than it is, and they knock it over.

There are three solutions to this, that can be done together. The first is to put your hand lower and reach for the glass then. Because the hand is closer to the base, it is more likely to just move the cup slightly than tip it over.

The second is to go slower. This gives the person more reaction time to stop their hand from pushing the cup over.

Third is to put their hand palm-down on the table, with fingers extended but slightly curled. When the fingers impact the cup, they have less mass and move give than a hand, so they bend. That means it is less likely to knock the cup over and gives the person more reaction time.

Another easy thing to do is not use transparent cups. Use cups that are strongly contrasting against the table (a dark cup on a light table).

I think the only challenge with picking up glasses and mugs that contain liquids is if they're on a counter and you don't know they're there. You might be reaching for something else, or even just checking that the counter is empty, and unintentionally knock over the glass.

I'm not prone to knocking things over, but I do find I prefer glasses in particular with a heavier base, which are not so light to the touch and consequently less likely to topple if brushed accidentally.
