Hi there. I work for a small university with a couple of campuses. We have maps of both campuses on our website as PDFs. I would like to make them accessible to blind users but don't know how to do this or if it needs tackling in a completely different way. If you can give me any advice or suggestions, I'd be very grateful.

Here's another alternative that is pretty new on the scene -- non-visual electronic maps from SAS.
I'm actually in the process of creating one for one of my own O&M students.

There's also a getting started tutorial for maps which covers basic exploration: https://support.sas.com/accessibility/tutorials/maps/

Thank you, Jack. This would be particularly useful to share with students before they arrive so they could familiarise themselves beforehand. Have you found it needs a lot of technical knowledge or is it relatively easy to follow the instructions?

Not Jack, but I'll try to answer your question. Creating maps is pretty simple following the directions in Jack's link above. From the student's perspective, they just need to install the SAS Graphics Accelerator within Google Chrome and open the HTML file generated by the map creator. If they haven't used maps in the SAS Graphics Accelerator before, there is a getting started tutorial which walks them through the basics of exploration: https://support.sas.com/accessibility/tutorials/maps/.

That's interesting.... I'll definitely have to do more research into that! I've been using My Map for years, but I never realized it was accessible to that degree.

The SAS graphics accelerator just added the ability to do maps last month. So it’s pretty new!
Check into a company that can do 3D printed to convert the PDFs into something the 3D printer could understand. If there is a nearby agency that works with the blind, an O&M instructor can also help make suggestions for improving map accuracy and readability.

The lighthouse for the blind and visually impaired in sf does tactile maps called t-maps. If u need any type of tactile map, then they’re the people to go to.

My post has been removed by moderators and I don't know why. I would like advice please on how to make a pdf map accessible to blind users.
