I get this sometimes. When I tell people I am totally blind, they usually think I have some vision because I look at them when I speak to them. I usually say something smart like I don't need eyes to hear you talking. Honestly, I like when people don't think I'm blind. I get to walk around for the rest of the day and imagine myself as some sort of ninja. That usually ends the minute I run in to something.

I would ask them what they think blind looks like and then talk to them about the media, confirmation bias, and stereotypes. I would say, if someone does look blind or not, you're making an assumption until you talk to them. If they have any kind of minority status, I would use that to help them relate to being stereotyped. I would talk about how complicated the world of blindness is...and then I would get off the soap box lol! I know not everyone likes to educate, but I don't mind.

Background is I could see until I was 19 and I have completely normal body language, so I get this constantly. If you want to be offensive, you just reply "and I bet you don't look stupid." If you don't, you just laugh and do what city girls said.

Looks can be deceiving or have they ever told you not to judge a book by its cover.

I lost my sight when I was 14 so often when I am in a situation where people don't see my cane or didn't see my now retired Seeing Eye dog, I'll get that remark. My response usually is "Well, what does blind look like then?"

Would it be possible to make a joke like "That's pretty much what it means!" or is that really stupid? Based on the way you can interpret "You don't look blind" to mean "You don't look while blind, you don't look when you are blind" similar to phrasing like "You shouldn't drive drunk."
