How to listen to more modern books (self.Blind)
submitted by justryingto
Hello- on behalf of my grandmother here...

she is blind and LOVES listening to stories however she cannot use any type of touch phone or complicated device to play them. Right now we are playing audiobooks from the talking book library but they tend to be either VERY boring or VERY sexual... I am trying to find a way for her to listen to more books that interest her but wasn't sure if anyone had any advice!

Are you talking about a talking book library for the blind? If so, which one? All of the ones I know about try to get books from various genres and time periods, so you can just call them and ask to be sent more modern books.

I've heard good things about the Amazon Echo for older not tech savvy people. I suggest you search for that on this subreddit.

Google Home as well, different use case but I was kind of stunned by how quickly my 80 year old FIL took to his.

The Amazon echo can read your Kindle books. that would be pretty easy to setup for her. Audible is a good choice as well. since she can't/won't use the iPhone, iPad, or computer I assume, then perhaps the digital talking book player from nls would be a good fit. They have tons and tons of books available if you browse for them on their web site and it's all free including the player. You would just need to apply for her if she's not able to do it herself.

Is she eligible for an independent living instructor from your state agency to come work with her? This is one thing they can help her with among many other things. Depending on her age and her level of sight loss at this point, she may not be aware of all of the neat assistive technology available these days to help you be independent.

Ok have you considered buying an Alexa speaker for her? With that she can control the books with her voice, and you can buy books from Audible by picking them together, one gets one free book a month on that service.

Would a subscription to $1 be affordable? Both blind and sighted friends in my book club have used Audible and liked it.
