I started playing last night and it's honestly mind-blowing some of the features they have implemented. I'm severely sight impaired but I have some useful vision, I absolutely love the high contrast filters and the enhanced listen mode that will point out the location of items etc.. The audio prompts are amazing as well and the function to press L3 to point the camera in the direction of where you need to go. I hope this game inspires other developers to put more effort into accessibility

Thanks for your thoughts on this. I ordered the game.

I really liked the first one and the prospect of not being able to play the sequel, as my vision deteriorated, was one of those little pieces of disappointment we've all come to know.

I'm pretty excited now. Let's see if it's as good as I've been hoping for the last few years!

Honestly I think without the accessibility features I wouldn't be able to play it very well at all. Either that or it will take me like 10 times as long

I've actually been pretty bummed out about not being able to play a couple of games lately.

I decided to replay the 2010 reboot of Medal of Honor and got completely stuck on a section where you have to mark targets with binoculars. Before that I kept getting lost, which is actually impressive, given how linear and shooting-gallery-like the maps are.

I'm OK at vaguely pointing at muzzle flashes, but I've been missing ladders in games a lot (I can, at least, see doors), so the feature of pointing you in the right direction is incredibly exciting for me.

I'm mostly interested in the narrative experience for this game, so I'm fine with making it easier on myself.

Have you been playing any other games that are reasonably accessible?
Ross2503 2 points 3y ago
Yeah it can be very deflating when you can't play a game anymore because it's not accessible. And not really because not many are, I tend to stick to games that are simple visually, like FIFA and Rocket League, or games I'm so familiar with that I can still have fun with them like GTA. New games are so difficult to get into for me now, until this one

I really want to play this game. I am totally blind and hate to buy a ps4 for 1 game though. Is the rest of the system accessible? Like the menus on the ps4 itself?
ianhamilton__ 5 points 3y ago
Depends what country you're in, if you're in the USA then some but not all of the system menus are accessible through built in text to speech
MostlyBlindGamer 2 points 3y ago
Text to speech is region specific? Wouldn't it depend on the system language?
SightlessBastard 5 points 3y ago
No, unfortunately not. Apparently it is a hardware thing. It is kind of ironic, that the first fully accessible main stream game has been released for the least accessible consul. That being said, I hope, that this game will be successful enough, that other developers will consider, adding accessibility features to their games as well. I know, the chances are pretty low. But I hope, that there will be a version for the PC at some point in the future. I am a bit worried, that the exclusivity of the game, especially on the PS4, will not have a big enough impact, regarding accessibility.

It isn't the least accessible console, there are more than two consoles!

There won't be a PC version. It isn't just a PlayStation exclusive, the game is actually made by PlayStation, they own Naughty Dog.

No need to worry about impact though, their previous game (Uncharted 4) did some nice things for motor accessibility and that had enormous impact across the whole industry, if you've ever seen a game in the past few years that has an accessibility menu with an option to turn off QTEs that's why.

The same will happen (and already is happening) with last of us 2.
MostlyBlindGamer 1 points 3y ago
Wow, that is absolutely shocking.
SightlessKombat 3 points 3y ago
No it doesn't, not quite. It does depend on what you have your language set to, but the functionality only exists on models sold in certain regions, according to the documentation.
MostlyBlindGamer 5 points 3y ago
That's such a terrible decision on Sony's part.

I'd say TTS in a language you're not completely fluent in is still superior to a console you can't use.
ianhamilton__ 3 points 3y ago
No, it has to be a USA PS4 being used in the USA and the language set to US English.
SightlessKombat 2 points 3y ago
I just hope the PS5 can resolve this longstanding issue and allow so many more people to take advantage of the console that has an extremely accessible game available for it (if the idea of backwards compatability is embraced by Sony for PS4 titles).

I don't know if you personally like let's play-type videos on YouTube or Twitch streams, but that's how I vicariously enjoy many video games that would be too visually challenging for me.
Drunken_Idaho 2 points 3y ago
I do like lets plays. PROBABLY I'll just enjoy the game that way, just would love to actually play it. Sounds like a hell of a ride from what I've read and watched on youtube.

Same here.

I don't have a PS4, but this is very encouraging to hear. :D

I love seeing this. A mainstream game that is playable by the blind not just because it is fun to play video games but because of the social implication. When your friends or anyone else decides to play this game anywhere you will be socially included and not left out because your blind.
SightlessKombat 3 points 3y ago
Well said. I made this point myself before the game launched after playing the review copy and writing the beginnings of the review in the OP. It's been a great ride so far and I'm hoping to finish it ASAP so I can go back and try and get the platinum trophy, my first ever if I manage it.
