submitted by soundwarrior20
hi everyone, I hope your all staying safe and well.

I'm looking for a NAS box to store my media collection on, I will be accessing it with Mac os10 and IOS does anyone know of any accessible software I could use to manage my NAS box from Mac os10 and IOS? I've tried posting on a couple of blind tech groups but didn't get anywhere so I'm wondering if anyone here can help. thanks very much in advance everyone.

I use Synology nas has good interface assessable from anywere in world on any platform.
I use android devices and the wife and grandchildren use those fruit things.

I have tried qnap and roku

Qnap had limited expansion and did not have feature I was after and personally did not like interface. And i had issues with fruit vs wimdows/android as fruit keeped wanting to convert files to they crappy file types.

Roku had poor voice search functionality and no HDR support.

Synology is not cheap hard drives not included but I went with small business / enterprise entry level system 4 bays 40tb storage with ability to add extra 40tb in future.

Use proper Nas designed drives they may be more expensive but I had 100% data recovery on the 1 drive that started to die.

They have live chat so you can contact and ask them everything technical before you buy as well.

Sorry not a fruit fan.

Thanks for this do you know if the software is accessible on Mac and iPhone?

Yes, there are two software interfaces one is web based for PC / Mac the other is app based for tablets phones. Which is more the user interface style.

If you are using if for movies the app is like netflicks its called dsvideo or you can use Plex but Plex is a paid subscription style if you want to use it outside of home network so I just use dsvideo which is Synology"s own version.

If you contact any control 4 dealer... Which is for automated home systems and home theatre systems they also use Nas as the storage and run it through either dsvideo, Plex or Kodi so that's another way to go.... You don't need the control 4 system.

Mine is set up as Nas storage running dsvideo server then i have a Minix neo u9 as the interface with control 4 that runs the home theatre projector and sound system so everything runs through 1 remote control. I'm lazy I hit one button lights turn on system starts up I chose movie hit one button lights start to dim then turn off as movie starts.

Pm me if you like i can set up a guest access to my network so you can look at the dsvideo program if you don't have any luck at home theatre stores

Hi thanks very much for this this looks like the way to go. I don’t want anything too complicated just a hard drive I can store my media on and watch or play it from my Mac and iPhone. I’ve been looking on Apple viz and there’s been concerns about the accessibility of synology apps on iOS can you coment on this?

Wife has the iphone 11 and tablet no issues at all. So far. Grandkids all have iPads and we have had no issue there.

The only one had been the apple tv but we solved that by running it on tablet and casting it to tv.

for what ever reason apple tv did not like coding in any format other than iTunes accepted so no mkv or avi or MP4.

Talk to home theatre stores that do the full automated systems they can advise on any apple Synology issues

Prefect316 1 points 3y ago
Which one? I'm also looking to get one, which is why I ask.

Synology all the apps appear to be accessible with iOS

Which model? I'm interested in the DS220J because of the price.

I use unraid, you will need to bring your own computer. Very expandable though
soundwarrior20 [OP] 1 points 3y ago
When you say bring your own computer what do you mean?
AndAdapt 1 points 3y ago
You install unraid on your own hardware. So it's not a pre built device. You can use old hardware though, until the other month I was using a twelve year old computer

Thanks very much for this but I don’t think I’ll be going for that
