Here is a short video demonstration on how to protect oneself from kitchen cabinet doors that are left open. (youtu.be)

That is a really important skill, and it can apply to many circumstances. I teach clients that technique for when they are seated, and they knock something off a table, and are leaning over to get it (especially glass tables!). I've had a number of clients smack themselves against tables when leaning down.

Or also, glass doors that are partially or fully open. When approaching a glass door along the thin side, it's almost impossible to see.

Why didn’t my mobility instructor teach me this lmao I still knock my head on stuff pretty often.

If someone has some vision, instructors sometimes doesn't think it is necessary to teach (because people can see the stuff). But then the person's vision gets worse, and they are missing the skill. It comes up sometimes, especially when another instructor takes over and doesn't realize they weren't taught that

I think that’s why my orientation/mobility training was really lacking. The instructor was like "hey can you see the roadlights’ colours? Good then we don’t need to learn how to naviguate road crossing then". It was pretty shit and became useless once I lost more sight.

If you lose more vision, definitely talk to the instructor for more training. I try to cover the basics if someone has usable vision, but I may not go in-depth or practice much if they could see the lights. But I do try to make sure to do a review so they still know the basics.

Totally agree. Thanks for sharing

I can see how this could be helpful. My current technique is to yell at others who may be the culprits of leaving the cabinet doors open ;-)

Haha...that’s a good one too.

Our kitchen doesn't have any face level cabinets although I can't say I particularly had this issue in mind when I made that call.

The thing that gets me is the half open door. My mother is particularly good at this then complains when I have the cane out in their place.

Mike has a LOT of good videos, including tech reviews. As a sighted engineer working in tech, I benefit from watching his videos rather than simply reading about some of the techniques in books.

Though you'll find it anyway, I figured I'll provide the direct link to Mike's YouTube channel here:

Great information, there were many times in which I had this accident, as a blind person I will never taught this, thank you
