advice (self.Blind)
submitted by williaro28
My father in law lost his sight a few years ago as a side effect of treating another medical issue. He now lives with us. I have set up an alexa and he is able to use it daily for news, sports, etc. We were talking about trying to find something to help him use an Ipad we have to read the local newspaper from his home town, send emails to old work friends, etc. Really just want to take more steps in helping him get back to doing things he was doing before.

Any advice on products we should pursue? He is not exceptionally tech savy so ease of use is a big deal. If we need to buy a laptop instead of an ipad we can do that too, just wanted to get any advice. Thank you.

Try voiceover. It’s built in to all apple products and really intuitive: you touch the screen and it reads what’s under your finger. If it’s a communal iPad you can even play with the settings so a triple click of the home button turns voiceover on and off.

iPad's a good start. Anything that runs iOS or iPadOS will be accessible with Voiceover, and it's the best solution for someone who isn't technically inclined. If all he wants to do is read news and send email, the iPad will be more than adequate. It handles web browsing and light productivity like a champ.

I suggest you steer clear of Mac OS for now. It's been languishing for quite some time, and Apple has just announced it will be transitioned to their own chips in the next 2 years. If you need something for heavier productivity tasks, your best bet would be a Windows machine running NVDA, but the learning curve there is significantly steeper.

If you already have an iPad, just go in and turn on VoiceOver
