JOBS - writer questions (self.Blind)
submitted by marcia_faith_love
Hey! Writer here again.

My character - a man in his mid-to-late twenties, needs an occupation. I'm trying to avoid the blind musician trope (though he is very musical as a hobby), and I'm looking for some suggestions on some career options for him.

I'm thinking somewhere in medical field, because it would be very useful to the plot. I just don't know what niche of medicine he would fit into the best.

This is an apocalyptic story, so anything that could be versatile and useful in an emergency situation would be awesome.

Any ideas?

Blind people can do almost any job. What job would you have given him if he weren't blind? If you want to avoid stereotypes, don't choose a job just because of his blindness.

While I agree that visually impaired people can do most anything, there are some jobs we seem to excel at. I studied massage therapy for some time, and was in high demand when I did my clinical portion. I believe that the clients liked my blindness, it lowered their guard a bit as I wasn't going to judge them by their appearance while partially disrobed, and there were less awkward moments if a towel slipped.

The pharmacist?

Maybe he deals drugs on the side...

That’s very specific so not really versatile but in my country, the second most popular career choice for blind people (after teaching) is being a physiotherapist.

I have a genetic disorder so I know quite a few visually impaired family members and 2 of them are physiotherapists haha.
