Looking for a new hobby. (self.Blind)
submitted by AnonSnowRaven
I'm legally blind and looking for a new hobby, what are your hobbies?
achromatic_03 3 points 3y ago
I enjoy modular origami, knitting, used to do indoor rock climbing which was really fun but expensive, video games like everyone else here lol, would love to get back into piano, European strategy board games, jigsaws...nothing too exciting I guess

I go for walks, I was working out at my gym before it closed due to virus, I cook for my mom and siblings, I played a little guitar, lots of reading and watching tv/movies with described video.

I code and play a web-based game called The Violet Sector. I'm totally blind.
AnonSnowRaven [OP] 1 points 3y ago
How is it? What kind of game is it?
Fridux 1 points 3y ago
It's a 20 year old space themed strategy web game which surprisingly still manages to keep its core player-base. You are the pilot of a space ship and are part of one of four legions (teams). Every 3 hour turn you get 5 moves to spend on different actions such as shooting, repairing, hypering to other sectors, and so on. The objective of the game is to bomb the planets that serve as home-worlds to the other three legions, and the last legion that survives wins the game. Each round typically lasts between three weeks and a couple of months, and currently the game is disabled because we've just finished a round. Sometimes there are very fast-paced rounds called Frantics with 15-minute turns which I'm probably not able to play with a screen-reader as I'm rather slow. The game is available $1 and I'm currently making a companion $1 for it.

Thank you, I'll give it a shot. :)

I like to write. I need to continue that. I also like to listen to audiobooks and podcasts. I liked playing Sims, but can’t do that now and I don’t know if I ever will :( I need an outlet for my Sims fix. I like shopping and food. I’m honestly super boring and I need new hobbies myself.
AnonSnowRaven [OP] 1 points 3y ago
Same, which is why I asked for other peoples hobbies for new ideas. I just started getting into podcasts.
CosmicBunny97 2 points 3y ago
Which podcasts do you like?
AnonSnowRaven [OP] 1 points 3y ago
I like this youtuber taylor woods and she just started a pod cast a few weeks ago 'don't get it twisted', it's the first one I've listened too. What do you listen too? I like a variety of topics.

Oh nice, I’ll have to check it out. I like comedy stuff mainly. I just recently discovered Unpacking Brisbane, which is a podcast talking about the suburbs in the city I live in. I also love the Rooster Teeth podcast and Always Open, but that’s on hiatus. Another one of my favourites is The Worst of The Riot, which is a podcast form of a morning show but they’re hilarious.

I'm mostly boring, but like doing fantasy baseball. I like watching movies and playing video games, but I keep getting headaches from them....

Eh, I guess coding could be considered a hobby. I do it for money, but it's pretty fun when I finally figure out how to make something. I've made apps related to video game tournaments and sports betting (with points, not real money). (they're called apps, but not ones you download in app stores, exactly...)

How did you get into coding and what programming languages do you know?
dunktheball 1 points 3y ago
I was basically originally just planning on running a forum site and I paid someone to make me a program for it (a system for reviewing products). Then I eventually looked at his code and noticed how a lot of it worked and after a while was making my own.

I mainly just use php. I really need to start learning some more, such as javascript. All of the programs I make are for a certain forum software, so luckily a lot of things are done by just calling their built in functions, so I can do a lot without understanding every single aspect.
AnonSnowRaven [OP] 1 points 3y ago
That's interesting!

I just randomly learned the coding and it's a good thing I did because I needed the extra money! I had someone else make me an app for my forum site and then when he was unavailable to add features, I looked at the files and I eventually figured out how to do things myself. Then when the forum software had newer versions I had to learn a lot more, though, but I can do quite a bit of things now.

Ironically, the same year reddit started, I was trying to get a site for discussion of any topic to work out, but I ended up not being able to get enough people posting, and then here comes reddit being successful. lol. I am trying to decide some new ideas for forum sites... I'd like to make a dating one, but then I see in the news when people meet and someone is a criminal they start suing the sites....
AnonSnowRaven [OP] 1 points 3y ago
Wow, that's great! Also, I haven't heard of anyone suing dating sites, that's crazy.

I like rock or indoor climbing, hiking, learning languages, painting, scrapbooking, travelling (whether in my own city or in the actual outside world). Honestly you can do pretty much anything with the right accomodations.
