Best low vision reading desktop machine? (self.Blind)
submitted by halgreene
My mom has advanced macular degeneration (she's 90) and can no longer read or apply makeup. We've seen some very cool machines that can help her. One had a terrific XY table that had a very smooth operation to move the book beneath the camera, but the machine she liked the best had a camera mounted on an arm such that the camera can be swiveled to face her so she can do makeup, too. But then for reading we'd have to buy a standalone XY table that doesn't seem quite as as good as the one built into the other machine. So we're torn. Price is no object, so here is my question:

1. Best swivel-camera machine?
2. Best XY table?
3. Other solutions we may not be considering?

She likes machines with bigger screens that have large control knobs either built directly into the monitor or on a convenient pod.

Thanks!

Hi there. She may want to consider a hybrid portable video magnifier like the Optelec ClearView GO, which is similar to a desktop video magnifier but includes a rotatable mirror. It's great for reading, distance viewing, or using as a mirror for applying makeup, etc. It also has a rotatable magnification knob and a wheel that allows you to navigate the text as you read.

As mentioned in a previous comment, the Optelec ClearView C is another great option in the desktop CCTV category. The ClearView C Speech model includes text-to-speech functionality.

You can check out video demos of each product at the following links:

Where she lives, do you know if the state or province has a system for testing people and providing government funding? Where I live, they have a program that shows people 4-5 models that are partially funded by the government, and the health care system covers 75% of the cost.

I think the one with swivel camera you saw is an Acrobat.

Here is an article about how to choose a CCTV. There are many factors at play, and the devices aren't cheap.

Two popular models are the Optelec Clearview C (https://ca.optelec.com/The+new+Optelec+ClearView+C) and Freedom Scientific's Topaz (https://www.freedomscientific.com/products/lowvision/topazezhd/)

This is very helpful thanks. Do you know anything about XY tables?

The CCTV with the moveable tops? Those are the more common ones. Any specific question?

Definitely check about low vision services in your area. The government may cover some of the cost, for specific models.
