Advice with audio description - particularly with the movie "letters from iwo jima" (self.Blind)
submitted by morbidSuplex
Hi all! Can someone help me with audio description?

I have a favorite movie called "letters from iwo jima". It is audio described. Here is the link from audiovault if you want to listen:

I believe the audio description is beautifully done (considering that 90% of the language is japanese). But I have a big problem that for some unknown reason I noticed just today (after 2 years of listening). The narators are just too loud. Like for example, if the characters are speaking, a narator translates it to english, but the problem is the original japanese voice is drowned out. My questions are:

1. What do you think of the balance between the describer and the movie? Is it good in your ears?

2. Is there a way to lower the describer's voice?

Maybe it's just my earphones. I certainly have not noticed this before. But I ask you all just to confirm if I am right.

Thanks all!

As a Japanese learner, if you want to experience the original version and it’s a favorite movie you’ve seen a couple times before, perhaps you can just give it a go in Japanese. You can understand quite a bit of a foreign movie just from tone of voice and knowing the plot ahead of time.

Well I am not a japanese learner. Although I very much want to. Since one of my favorite things to watch is new japan pro wrestling

Glad to find another fan of the undisputed King of Sports on here.

Nice! Idk your level of sight but if you’re not interested in reading that would actually be a huge time saver - the writing system is said to be the worst slog of learning the entire language.

I haven’t watched any Japanese wrestling, but music is totally my stuff. If you’re not into J-pop but want to give Japanese music a try, I have a ton of artists I could share from rock, alt, rap, oldies, etc.

I’d love some recs! Used to be big into Gackt and Miyavi, among others, but haven’t kept up with the Jmusic scene whatsoever.

Omg I love gackt and miyavi!

I like Miyavi’s sound! And it always fascinates me when Japanese artists (like Gackt) have such a 90s-00s sound despite putting out music recently haha. I like it, thanks!

Here’s some current favorite albums of mine:

- Happily Confused by Ghost in the Tapes
- Near Your Ear by ANYO
- D.A.N. by D.A.N. (Selftitled album)
- All of the stuff put out by gesunokiwamiotome, because I can’t get enough of it.

Once it's been mixed down to a single file, you cannot make those kinds of edits.

But what do you think about the audio balance of this particular file?
