I have no idea but it sounds awesome! Are you going to do airbnb? Can I come by?

Do you remember what watches for the blind were like before they spoke? You flipped open the glass and felt the position of the dials by touch.

This worked well for spring driven and highly geared dial hands because it was hard to knock them from their set position. Because most indicator dials are galvanic driven you would need a brake button to temporarily lock them in position before feeling them. Think like the felt covered dampers in a piano that are controlled by the foot pedals.

Instead of a specific brake button, Burton braille compasses have a mechanism in the hinge. So when the compass is opened to check the direction, a brake is engaged that holds the compass dial still.

Oh man you are just the person I need to talk to! I've been looking for one of those for years but no luck. Do they still sell them anywhere?
My O and M instructor had one a long time ago when I was in high school and I've always wanted to pick one up.
any info would be awesome!

As far as I know, they were discontinued years ago. With almost everyone having a phone that has a compass built in, sales were pretty low. I've been trying to find one myself as a demo. I last saw one about 5 years ago.

Well thats a bummer. Thanks!

Would it be possible for you to monitor the controls through a computer programming?
sithsecretwayfinder 2 points 3y ago
Thats an idea. The issue with that if nukes drop itll fry the components. Also computers are harder to fix when broken. If it somehow breaks I cant fix it. Leaving me withou controls.

What about incorporating a Faraday cage into the design?
Dollydaydream4jc 1 points 3y ago
I second the Faraday cage. Can't really see another way around this without greatly complicating things.

Definitely methods of hardening technology against EMPs. Air Force One is hardened against EMPs, and that's essentially a flying bunker, so it's possible. It likely isn't cheap, though.

Just wondering if I can move in with you
