digital recorder with accessible interface (self.Blind)
submitted by SirJektive
Anybody know of a good digital recorder with a relatively blind-accessible interface?

I'm looking for something handheld, and that supports storage in lossless formats. To use for a mix of voice and field recordings.

Would the Victor Stream fit your needs? It can record, and it was designed to be accessible. It's primarily a DAISY player, but it is suppose to be able to record as well.

It sounds like you’re serious about your recording, so I’m going to recommend the Zoom F6. Like the MixPre-II recorder which has already been recommended, it does 32-bit float recording, but the big advantage of the Zoom F6 is that it has an iOS app which is quite accessible, whereas the MixPre app is much less so.

The 32-bit float is a big deal for blind people, because it’s virtually impossible to make this thing clip when you’re recording. You can then take your files into a DAW like Reaper and adjust your levels.

The Zoom F6 has tactile controls and no touch screen. You’ll need to memorise some key sequences to enable Bluetooth, turn it into a USB device etc, but it’s definitely doable.

For a review and audio demo, you can check out episode 35 of my podcast, Mosen At Large, available wherever you get podcasts. There’s a small group of blind Zoom F6 users out there now and we’re all supporting one another.

I know there’s an Olympus model that has voice guidance for the buttons. I can’t remember the exact model number unfortunately. It also connects to the computer for file management.

hello, i need a urgent responce.

i know that the new om system old olymmpus has a recorder the lsp5, confirme that the lsp5 has spoken menus as the lsp4, please

The Olympus LSP4 has spoken menus. A lot of their line has had spoken menus since about 2012 or so, but the earlier models don't always cover everything like setting the internal clock. You can't really go wrong with anything in their line of recorders as far as I know. It's all down to preference of sound.

I can't confirm that the LSP5 has spoken menus, as I've never owned it. It should be mentioned in the documentation you can find online.

Sorry I can't be of more help.

For what purposes exactly? Like Foley work?

There's not an infinite number of good options for production equipment even ignoring accessibility concerns.

SoundDevices MixPre-II might be a solid option for you.

They are meant for a sound bag, so not quite handheld...

But they have physical buttons, good haptic feedback in the knobs, and do 32 bit float recording, which is the audio equalvalent of shooting RAW, meaning you can effectively ignore all your levels, etc and do it in post later.

I see nothing show stopping about using a MixPre-II blind.
