Solved the problem in a roundabout way:
I remembered that NVDA supports the great feature called Regular Expressions, and used my little knowledge of the feature to solve this issue.
Whenever you want to read a Wikipedia article you can add an entry to NVDA's Temporary dictionary in which you need to copy/paste or type the following Regular Expression formula in the Pattern edit box:
\s*\[\d+\]
Don't type anything in the Replacement field, and choose Regular expression as the entry type.
Now until the next time you close and open NVDA again it ignores all the footnotes in Wikipedia articles.
You could add the entry to one of the permanent dictionaries, but it may create problems elsewhere, like when you want to do some programming.
You also can turn on the Use screen layout feature and turn off the announcement of links in Document Formatting to have a very pleasant experience in reading Wikipedia articles.

Check out audible wikipidia for IPhone.
I don’t mind the numbers but the app doesn’t mention them.

I don't use an iPhone, unfortunately. It's just Windows and Android.
