Help my dad use discord chat (self.Blind)
submitted by DWdame
Hi everyone. My dad just turned 66 years old, and also just found out his macular atrophy is permanent. He and my mom used the Discord chat program to keep in touch with my brothers and I, who live about 2 and a half hours away. He has an iphone and an ipad, but they are struggling with the accessibility features. This is new to all of us, and I feel overwhelmed trying to help them. I can't imagine how it is for them. If you have any tips or links to resources that you think might be particularly useful for our situation, I would very much appreciate it. Thank you so much!

Choose another service. FaceTime on iOS, Line, WhatsApp, those all work decently well with VoiceOver. Discord is hot garbage and is really difficult to use and navigate even for expert VO users.

Dang. Well, I appreciate the feedback!

Discord is a pain in the ass and the developers suck. Only reason I use it is because all my friends and communities use it as well. Follow the advice of the other users here. It's not worth the trouble for many VI people.

Yeah RIP, Discord and accessibility don't quite go hand in hand. The blind community has been going at it with Discord's devs for ages trying to get it where it is now, and it's an ongoing struggle.

Does your father use Voiceover on the IOS?

This is all pretty sudden and new for him, so I think he and my mom have been experimenting with it. But the learning curve seems daunting enough without also being 65 plus years old.

I recommend you guys just stick with Facetime, since it's already built in IOS. And prep him toward turning on Voiceover, that should really help him. PM me if you need help in this area!

It's a pity because i want to join some discord ervers, but it's almost immpossible to use. Is there an alternative client? [using ios]

No, sadly.
In my experience I found that Discord was far more accessible on Android as opposed to IOS which kinda threw me for a loop. But even the IOS app, it's not the best, but it's useable. If you want to use Discord just use the desktop app.

Definitely better on the Windows application, I still use it on iOS, but it is rather fiddly

Hmm, he needs a new phone... I don't see why he couldn't go for an Android.

IOS already has Facetime built in which is 100% accessible. They could just go with that, why the Discord requirement?

sadly, I don't have a pc.
