I'm considering getting into lockpicking. You do it with your hands through feel and everything happens inside the luck, so it seems to be inherently accessible.
Apocalyptias 2 points 3y ago
Hey! I've been picking locks since the beginning of the year, I'd be happy to help out. Send me a PM with any questions you've got!
MostlyBlindGamer 2 points 3y ago
Thanks! I actually ordered a starter kit today. I should get started next week.
AlbertFlintstein 2 points 3y ago
I love this idea. I may try this myself!
[deleted] [OP] 1 points 3y ago
I've already learnt it. Lol. I want to move yo safe cracking but most safes can't be breached tactically no more.
MostlyBlindGamer 1 points 3y ago
You're way ahead of me then.

Any recommendations on how to get started?
[deleted] [OP] 2 points 3y ago
I honestly started by using bump keys and a lockpick gun just to make it simple and open locks without being discouraged. Then I started looking into more picking by hand with tools. I actually carry a lockpick necklace at all times just in case. Its a small lockpick tool necklace like a dogtag. It comes with 6 tools which are the basic essentials to get into locks.
MostlyBlindGamer 1 points 3y ago
Very cool.

I was thinking of getting some kind of starter toolkit and picking up some small padlocks and such.

I'm interested in the hobby moreso than actually getting into places or things.
gelema5 1 points 3y ago
Perhaps brain teaser puzzles
[deleted] [OP] 1 points 3y ago
I do those, riddles and more. I need something i can do or learn. Indoors since I have mobility issues unrelated yo sight.
blackberrybunny 4 points 3y ago
I've got one: Learn to make chain mail. You know, the clothing the knights would wear as protection? You get a gazillion of those little metal jumper rings and a pair of nose pliers and you "knit" them together to make some killer clothing. Stuff like shirts, or gauntlets, or a chain-mail head balaclave (spelling??) like head covering. Chain mail is cool!
[deleted] [OP] 1 points 3y ago
I have thought about doing zombie armour out of chainmail. Im just unsure if it tickles my fancy.
[deleted] [OP] 0 points 3y ago
The head armour called a chaif. Its not challenging enough sadly.
Apocalyptias 4 points 3y ago
Dungeons and Dragons!
phistomefel_smeik 3 points 3y ago
Second that, you cab also find an online group and play via Roll20!
Mysterybanjo 4 points 3y ago
Crochet or knitting, listening to podcasts, baking
[deleted] [OP] 0 points 3y ago
Not my scene.
Winnmark 3 points 3y ago
As per my usual response: alcohol, lots of it.

depending on how much sight you have, chest and video games are good hobbies. Death stranding is coming out on steam tomorrow for PC; if you buy it now you can still qualify for a pre-order & preload.

Running & jogging are always good options too.
coarsing_batch 1 points 3y ago
I know completely blind people that can play chess.
[deleted] [OP] 1 points 3y ago
Near total blind. Mobility issues unrelated to sight.
codeplaysleep 2 points 3y ago
"alcohol, lots of it" may have been a joke, but I actually am a bit of a bourbon collector.

If you're into things like bullion and precious metals, you might enjoy it. There's quite a bit to it, learning the history behind all of the breweries and how different whiskeys are made, different barrel types and approaches to aging, weather conditions, mash bills, etc. I'm sure craft beer is probably the same, and there's scotch, wine, etc..

It's a multi-faceted, fun hobby. It can get expensive, but there are also lots of affordable and interesting things out there, too (might help that I'm in Kentucky LOL).
Winnmark 2 points 3y ago
Yeah? What bourbon do you recommend?
[deleted] [OP] 1 points 3y ago
I have a few malts and brandy I've collected. Even one or two watches. But my finances are a bit stretched. And want to get away from collecting and look towards acquiring a new skill. Im struggling to find something new that interests me thats accessible and indoors.
Winnmark 1 points 3y ago
I'll be quiet now.
[deleted] [OP] 1 points 3y ago
No please if you have an idea its still a good idea. Lol. Thats why I'm looking for indoor hobbies. I am deaf and blind things like learning to play music is out. I've brewed beer, wine and spirits. Learnt lock picking. I would learn coding if I can find a teacher. I've been struggling to learn coding for 10 years. Indoor growing affects my allergies. Someone suggested knitting, chainmail and crocheting but they are not my style. Lol. Other than collecting more stuff im out of ideas.
codeplaysleep 3 points 3y ago
Start a. podcast about collecting bullion and precious medals

Learn to code
[deleted] [OP] 2 points 3y ago
I want to learn code. But I'm struggling finding a mentor to get me started as I'm struggling myself.
eenergabeener 1 points 3y ago
$1 is a good starting place for coding.
BlindFuryC 1 points 3y ago
In my experience, W3Schools has somewhat of a bad rap, it's kind of undeserved nowadays, but you'll probably want to look around more broadly too. See https://www.w3fools.com/ just for your reading. It's just worth mentioning in case it winds up being your only resource.

I spent some time looking for alternatives though, and I must admit my knowledge of the accessibility of the free ones is limited. MDN is always a good resource for web things though. Beyond that, it depends what you'd like to do
heyimbre 1 points 3y ago
$1 is my favorite resource for beginning python! u/sithsecretwayfinder Feel free to reach out with questions! I'm still a student though.

When I was in a similar situation (though I'm completely blind and don't have weak / bad bones), the following things kept me busy:

1. **Building a Digital Marketing Service Business —** This kept me busy since 2005. This involves learning niche market research, remote team building and management, copywriting, soft-sell content writing and marketing, Web advertising, technical SEO, remote UNIX server setup and management, HTML and PHP, WordPress, and tactical participation in relevant discussions across targeted social groups;
2. **Software Programming (Python & C++), Computer Vision / Machine Learning / Deep Learning Development (Tensorflow, OpenVINO, OpenCV) & Neuroscience-Based Artificial Intelligence Research —** This has kept me busy since 2017. Started out through hands-on practice. Earliest materials that helped me included content in $1 and $1 ; and
3. **Custom CryptoNight Multi-GPU Machine Building & DIY Electronics (SBCs or single board computers like Raspberry Pi and X86 boards, GPIO programming, HATs or hardware attached on top modules, etc.) —** This kept me busy since 2018. Involves a lot of reading and hands-on practice ...

**\[** *I also do heavy weightlifting exercises, 2 to 3 times per week, but I don't think you'd want this, as you mentioned you have weak / bad bones* **\]**

I hope this helps! :)

I've been looking for a python programming teacher who can come to my house to teach me 121 programming. I havent even though its been 10 years. I still put adverts in my local area every few months. Its something I want to do. Sadly, I cannot learn it myself due to learning difficulty. Im willing to pay for tutors but no takers.

I do want to set up a business but not found a business idea/line that has proven its worth and have just under £500 to set up a business which is nigh impossible. Out of all the ideas here yours is by far the strongest candidate. As you're striking the things I want to do but just cant without a tutor 121, face to face. I learn best when shown. 121 and face to face.
MRXGray 1 points 3y ago
Do you use a screenreader like JAWS For Windows, NVDA and VoiceOver? Or a magnifier? Or both?

I don't know if face-to-face tutorials is still allowed in your country. Here in the Philippines, it isn't. :(

But what about remote sessions with screenshare whre you'd see what's happening and also hear a screenreader talking while the tutor teaches you stuff, like Zoom for example?

Regarding setting up a business — How about service arbitrage?

On your own or through service providers, you can start by doing the following:

1. Set up a website. A self-hosted WordPress site will do;
2. Fill it with niche content. Just to show expertise in the services that you want to re-sell;
3. Set up a squeeze page to build your mailing list. Hook it up to an autoresponder. Entice your target customers to sign up by offering up-to-date service prices and an X% discount when they subscribe to your mailing list;
4. Set up a sales page that lists down your service packages. Use a WordPress shopping cart plugin like WooCommerce, so you can hook it up to your payment processor like PayPal; and
5. Promote your services by advertising locally, participating in relevant targeted local and international social groups, Web forums, and so on ...

I hope this gives you actionable ideas. :)
[deleted] [OP] 2 points 3y ago
Thanks. I'm not sure of any of that. This is were a tutor needs to come in.

Also, no stock, no business ideas. Low savings. I need to come up with a idea thats cheap that has growth potential and profit. Still in the thinking stage and finding a tutor to bypass my learning difficulties with technology.

I’m not great at Python yet. I’ve been meaning to learn it myself. I’m starting with HTML and JavaScript for now because that’s what I know best and it’s sfill a good place to start.
43wrox 2 points 3y ago
Learn to play drums you can start with a quiet practice pad and a pair of sticks for not much money. It’s a lot of fun playing along with your favourite songs.
midnight-muffins 2 points 3y ago
Writing? Clay sculpting? Baking? (Though that may require some specialized equipment) Yoga? These are just a few ideas
[deleted] [OP] 1 points 3y ago
Not my scene or have physical challenges.
EmpujaBalones700 2 points 3y ago
Learning how to sing.
againer 2 points 3y ago
Or better yet, Tuvan throat sing.
[deleted] [OP] 1 points 3y ago
I barely speak lol. Plus singing isn't my scene.
Silverottawa 1 points 3y ago
Sounds like your natural for rap

I’m a new user to this sub. I am not blind but I have a curious idea. I don’t know if it’s been discussed yet but how about stacking two or three canvas papers (otherwise known as painting paper) on top of one another and use a penknife to carve out images you’ve felt in 3D then using some nice silky paint and filling the ridges of your carved canvas paper with finger dabbed paint then waiting for it to dry. It might not immediately be clear but I imagine the 2nd or 3rd canvas paper in your carved and painted stack will have a neat feeling and looking painting.

This is just an idea, let me know your thoughts
[deleted] [OP] 1 points 3y ago
Arts really isn't something that interests me. I was the only, and first pupil at my school even to date that failed art exams because I didnt like it. Its a creative idea though. I hope someone reads and does it.
kailikameoka 1 points 3y ago
Do you like technology? Maybe try learning to code. You said that you like to use your mind. There’s a lot of fun problem sucking involved.

I’ve been learning on my own for almost 10 years and I’m starting a blog to make blind friendly coding tutorials (looking for feedback)

Is it blind friendly python??
donottouchthatbrl 1 points 3y ago
Learn a new language, try some indoor gardening if you have some good sublight reach your room, or something classic crafty - looming, knitting or crocheting

noaimpara 1 points 3y ago
I really like legos but the sets do come at a cost. Baking is also really cool.
[deleted] [OP] 0 points 3y ago
Neither of those are my scene. Im thinking of maybe metalworking. Forging. Coding something like thake. Baking and so forth are just a bit not me lol.
noaimpara 2 points 3y ago
Metalworking sounds really fun! Not exactly the same but i love to do simple woodworking on occasions.
[deleted] [OP] 1 points 3y ago
Why not? Im sure you can do it. If i can do basic metalworking near total blind im sure you can woodwork.
AlbertFlintstein 1 points 3y ago
What about some sort of martial art? I've been wanting to try Tai Chi for the sake of improving my spatial orientation and balance.
[deleted] [OP] 1 points 3y ago
