Mobility cane (self.Blind)
submitted by APJlovescats
Hi! I'm sorry if this is something that has already been discussed on this page!

Could I get some recommendations on good places to purchase a cane?

Thanks!

You want to choose canes from a company that makes a lot of them so you know they will be durable. I recommend Ambutech, a Canadian company that sells canes worldwide. There are a few other good companies, but Ambutech is where you should start.

I need to stress this: it's unsafe for a blind person to be travelling alone unless they have had orientation and mobility training. Just giving them a cane won't be useful unless they know how to use it.

Yes! I have had O&M, and got a cane through the agency I went to for that. I just would like to have additional canes, rather than just one. I wanted to research all my options before buying through that same agency again.

OK. That seems good. Ambutech offers lots of options to customize your cane. I recommend choosing similar options to what your previous canes had if you were happy with them so that it will be more familiar.

I got mine from a Visually Handicapped Association but usually i think your doctor or any organisation you were with would recommend the places where you could get a mobility cane.

Ambutech and the NFB are the two major ones.

https://ambutech.com/pages/canes is their direct site. They sell a variety of tips if you want to try different models.

NFB sells a variety of canes through their independence market, https://www.nfb.org/programs-services/independence-market or a single type of straight (non folding) cane they will send you for free through https://www.nfb.org/programs-services/free-white-cane-program most NFB canes come with a single type of tip, the metal glide tip, which is used primarily with two point touch and similar techniques.

NFB canes typically much lighter than Ambutech canes, but Ambutech canes have more options.

NFB canes, while light and super portable, also have a tendency to break easily. I went through two in a few months and it was incredibly upsetting. I love them more than anything, but I used to use the telescoping cane and it kept disintegrating on me. I know that most NFB people swear by the straight canes, but honestly I don’t feel like taking up that much space.
