A few questions. Need help, advice, or tips (self.Blind)
submitted by baredevilmattmurcock
So I have a couple of questions and this could end up being long sorry if so and sorry if formatting is bad as I’m on mobile and also sorry if there’s any grammatical error‘s or mistakes as I’m using dictate to type. But I recently was wanting to buy clothes and was going to do it off-line due to corona of course and thought this would be the easiest way for me because if I had a friend stay the night she could help me pick out some as well as maybe the voice over on my phone could describe the clothes or the page itself and have a description, but I came into a problem when trying to do so because I love the store and clothes from H&M but their app does not work at all with voiceover and is super accessible and was wondering if maybe anyone knows of some good ways for visually impaired people to shop for clothes and just anything to help with that. And another question I have is does anyone have any tips for keeping nails such as fingernails and toenails groomed and trimmed? Because I’ve tried using regular clippers to do so but they end up being jagged or I cut too far I cut them all crooked and just messed them up as well so I’m scared I’m going to one day cut myself or hurt myself. And I’ve tried using a nail file and while that works sometimes for my left hand I’m right handed so then doing my right hand is difficult as well as trying to file down my toenails is a bit tedious and uncomfortable. The last time I really groomed my toenails was when I got a pedicure kind of before the virus got crazy but now I don’t know when I’ll ever be able to go back to get another one again with the virus going around and picking back up where I am here in Texas. I know I could probably just ask my dad or grandma or maybe even a close friend to help me out but it’s a little embarrassing so I was wondering if anyone maybe knows any like tools or gadgets or tips to help with grooming your nails. Sorry for the really long post and asking two questions in one post and again sorry if any

There are apps!! On the sppstore there are apps that will tell you what they clothes look like that you scan with your camera. It will tell you the patterns and colours and style

If you go to the shop with the mask, can you ask one of the workers to help you out?

You could also use BeMyEyes for IPhone.

As for your nales, I can’t really help but if you could find nail clippers that catch the nails, that might be useful. The thing is, U don’t know if they’re around anymore.

I can't comment on the clothes thing because I just have my mom by them for me. When I trim my nails, I try to keep them as straight as possible, but I don't always succeed. I usually trim a little bit, and then run a finger across to see if I have any sharp edges. Sometimes I might have to trim one a little bit after a few days have passed. the main thing that works is for me is trimming them once a week. That way they don't get too long.

OK well of course anything helps. And yeah I will probably definitely have to get into a routine of doing them every week or so because right now they’re pretty long on one hand but not as long is on the other

In terms of shopping, you could face time a friend or family member to have them describe/help you navigate sights.

As a visually impaired person, I also find clipping nails to be rather challenging. I typically will use baby nail clippers because they don't allow you to cut super far/cut your skin, since they are ment for infants. I use of of my hands to hold the nail clippers and my other hand to guide them/make sure they are in place. The usually I just feel the edge of my nails with my finger tips to check for jagged edges. Sometimes I'll go in afterwards with a nail file to make sure none of them are sharp.

Yeah I guess I’ll have to do that one day or wait until I can have a friend come spend the night because of course I’d rather have a friend who’s my own age over my like 40-year-old dad help me pick out clothes lol. And thanks yeah I’ve been curious to see if maybe there’s any like tools that are a bit easier to use or some thing so I’ll definitely have to try and get myself a pair of infant clippers

What about one of those stylist services, like what is it... Stitch fix i believe it's called, where your personal stylist gets to talk to you over email and then sends you clothes they think you'd like. You only pay for what you keep and I believe the styling fee is $20.

Oh yeah I actually kind of forgot about those even though I’ve watched YouTube videos with people reviewing them for fun. I’ll have to try those out one day for sure then and see if I like it. Thanks for reminding me about those ha ha

Sorry for adding us in the comments but didn’t know where to put it. Also I do know I could just wear a mask and go out to the actual stores that may be open and bring along a friend to help me pick up clothes but here in Texas where I live the virus is really picking up unfortunately due to stupid people as well as I don’t have many friends come over as they’re busy with school so trying to buy clothes online just seems to be the easiest way or so I thought

Maybe when you find a piece of clothing online that you think has a good description, you can send the link to the item to someone. Then they can give you an opinion on it. I wouldn't be embarrassed to ask your family to help with your nails. If it is something you truely have trouble doing, I'm sure they would help.
