Does your APS talk? (self.Blind)
submitted by mrg3rry
Hi everyone, you may have seen my post on Twitter or on a Facebook group, but if you haven’t my question is in the city where you live do the APS is have a verbal countdown in English or are the APS systems audible with tones and melodies only to advise when it’s safe to cross the street?

Before anyone asks on how I’m using Reddit and I use voice over yes I have functional vision I just cannot read the screen as well as I’d like to so voiceover helps.https://i.imgur.com/XHw5KgM.jpg

In the Twin Cities, they vary. Not sure why… But some play bird sounds, while others speak the street name and say, “walk sign is on”.
I’m guessing some of the models are older than others.
I’ve heard of some APS systems doing the countdown, but not around here.

Toronto, Canada up here. Our APS has tones to tell us when the lights change, and then in stops when the visual timer starts.

It varies from place to place. There is no standard in the US, and apparently it's not even a requirement. My town doesn't have them - just normal crosswalks.

I’m not sure what APS is but I assume it’s the voice thing to cross the road as a pedestrian?

If it’s not that just ignore me haha

In Paris, when the pedestrian light is red, it reads out the name of the street you’re on and it says that the light is red over and over until it turns green and then it just goes beeep beeeep beeep until it turns red again.

So for exemple it might go like "rue Delbé, feu rouge, rue Delbé, feu rouge, rue Delbé, feu rouge BEEEEP BEEEEP BEEEEP BEEEP"

It stands for Accessible Pedestrian Signal.

It's a complete toss-up. Streets near more popular, touristy areas will have talking signals. Others will just make chirps, and a lot of them make no noise at all.

BTW this the subreddit for blind people. No need to worry about the sighted gawking at the fact you can use a phone here.
