Hey there! I can relate to your situation and it sucks!!! My progression was maybe slower than yours but perhaps I can offer a few tips to help! I also can not handle the playing of fast paced games (I am also 41f and started on an Atari sooooo) however I do enjoy watching them being played and participating in the banter (I live with my 37yr hubby and 26yr Male roomate). Sometimes even then the movement is too much so I just have my eyes closed and listen. Explore new game type options. Everyone plays those games because everyone has them. If you become interested in a new game, and share that with your buddies, you all may discover a new interest you weren't aware of previously! Dont be scared to let your friends know your struggles. Good friends will find a way to make it work and if the dont, well fuck em! Life is too short to not do the things you love! Good luck!

I forgot about Pinball! So my hubby is building me a virtual pinball table that feels real and can play almost any pinball table...like a MAME arcade box (also those are rad, we have one and its lots of fun). I hope to be able to have friends over for tournaments and game nights

Hey there, not visually impaired myself but my girlfriend is. She asked me to comment on this post as my job over the last year has been introducing her to games that are accessible enough to play.
- Elder Scrolls Online; An MMO. Keep in mind that this would be modified a fair bit with client-side mods (Add-ons) that are officially supported. I’ve seen text enlargers, danger areas highlighted with bright colours, map markers made huge, and even some screen readers which have been used by people with no vision whatsoever. If you’re at all interested you’ll likely need someone to help you get it set up (as did she).
- Stardew Valley; I’m unsure how interested your friends and brother will be in this game but it’s been my girlfriend’s most consistently played game until she bought Animal Crossing, especially so since it’s co-op as well.
- Knights of the Old Republic; You’ll like this if you like good stories. The main reason I recommend this is the janky yet convenient mechanic that allows you to pause the game in combat at any time and move the camera to view all your allies and enemies in the current fight. The old graphics may not help, however.
- INSIDE; Quite dark (both conceptually and kinda visually) but due to the simplicity of the movement and visuals I believe that it would be quite playable.
- Stanley Parable; She hasn’t played this one yet but wants to. The main idea is that a narrator talks over the whole game as a key game mechanic, it’s got some great humour and I would recommend it to just about anyone.
Depending on your level of vision I have a few more recommendations (some multiplayer) but these here are the ones I have the most confidence in in general.
Hope this helps!

Yo! Am said girlfriend, I asked him to comment instead of commenting myself because he has more knowledge and point of reference to games I haven’t played. I don’t know your level of vision but I do struggle with FPS and a lot of fast paced games.
Games with auto aim (like GTA5) and racing games are the ones I tend to really like out of the more “mainstream multiplayer games” on a console as it relies on muscle memory a lot more than you’d think, marking landmarks mentally really helps. In other PlayStation games I really took to the remastered Gravity rush game (not the second one yet), Driver San Francisco, and the little big planet series.
As much as not everyone has access to the Nintendo switch I love mine and have started to play animal crossing as well as stardew valley (which I also play on PC. while it is good on the switch, PC is more flexible in terms of increasing font size and general accessibility), other games like Mario kart can be faster paced if you play online, but it’s generally really good by yourself or with friends, memorising the tracks helps me a lot but it can take a bit of time. Super smash can be difficult as it’s not always focussed on your character (if you’re playing multiplayer it can get quite small) but I still enjoy it.
I largely love games like animal crossing as well. Terraria on different platforms can depend on how accessible it is, personally I prefer it on a tablet/iPad but each to their own and what controls you prefer using. (I’ve played on PC, Switch, and tablet/phone). With changing their settings you can make the cursor and the outline of it really large, the zoom is really good, it’s a bit harder to see at night but it’s not too bad if you try and avoid nighttime in the game.
In saying all that it really comes down to what’s available to you and how much people are willing to play games that aren’t just accessible for them and including you in games that you can play and have fun! There’s always a way :) I Hope this helps :)

I played gta up until about 2 months ago i find it very hard to play because of my vision level and strain
I still play like once a week to please my friends but come up with an excuse to get off it quickly

Hey that’s all good! If you can’t play you can’t play. Have you explained that the game is difficult for you?
Opinion-Future2 points3y ago
No i just make excuses

Depends on what you call fun! I really like text games that tell a story, especially if I can run them through a DOS emulator but they aren't nearly as exciting as being a sniper.

Do you wear tinted glasses? I used to use the yellow gaming glasses 24/7 because of the eye pain. Now I use a rose tint, but tinted glasses help ease the strain for me
Opinion-Future1 points3y ago
Only use tinted if theres glare because of photophobia

Honestly I enjoy the old school games and the new ones made on the mario maker thingy. The old nintendo games are so much fun and super freaking hard. They help build hand eye coordination which is beneficial for you. My hubby's the techie and I just reap the benefits! I like that nowadays you can save on the old school games and actually beat the levels! 🤣 yeah its "cheating" but whatever, it's fun! My teenage son thinks so too!

I'd look into fighting games genre. They have several that can be played with basically entirely audio queues only if you need to.
Things like Street Fighter and Killer Instinct are two for sure I know.
I know personally I used to play a bunch of League of Legends but am garbage at that now but I am pretty good at Team Fight Tactics because can set the board and don't need to have fast reaction times to things.

I feel you! I am not legally blind, but my eyes get strained easily / I get double vision etc. so some of my favorites get too intense when I’m having a bad day.
Personally, bright games or games without tons of flashy imagery helps. Some old faves like Spyro are good for me but Minecraft drives me nuts. I enjoy Don’t Starve and really liked Skyrim and Horizon Zero Dawn but darker areas are tricky for me and I didn’t get too far into them.
Sorry I don’t have more suggestions - I was out of the gaming scene for a long time before I got into OW and I love MMOs but in MMOs I found I was healing a lot so I could look up fights, know good positioning, and focus on looking at health bars more than the fights. Plus I like any game where visual cues can be edited (increase font) or have strong audio.
