Accessibility for podcast production (self.Blind)
submitted by [deleted]
I just thought I would post this topic here because I wanted to get some discussion going about what some Podcasters do to produce their episodes. I put together the Blind Luminations podcast and have yet to find customizable options that I’m satisfied with. I’m using a Mac with a combination of Amadeus Pro and Audacity. The first app is where I do all the editing like cut, copy, paste and normalizing. Audacity is almost entirely inaccessible, but I use it for compress dynamics and another plugin. My sighted wife helped me save some presets, so I am able to access those and apply them. Amadeus Pro also has options for compression, but I find they aren’t customizable enough.

So I’m really interested to know what apps and processes other blind users are using to put their podcasts together. I’m not totally satisfied with the sound from mine and remain Open to suggestions. Keeping it free would also be fantastic since I don’t really have much of a budget for our show. Any documentation for voiceover users would be even better: I’m no audio expert by any means and have just kind of pieced together different things to make the podcast work, but I am willing to learn. I’m really looking forward to hearing what others are doing. If you’re interested in checking out our show to hear what it sounds like, you can find it at https://www.blindluminations.com (i’m completely blind and tried to make it as accessible as possible but would love any feedback you might have on the website too.)

Also, just in case you may be interested, I write original music and do audio editing/podcast production among other things. So if you ever need any of that, feel free to drop me a message!

On the Mac, Reaper, Logic, and ProTools are great in terms of accessibility. They all have a learning curve but you'd have tons of accessible tools at your disposal!

Do you know of any tutorials or resources online that could help me learn how to use them? Obviously there’s a lot of documentation, but it isn’t geared towards people who are completely blind mainly.

My friend used to have some Reaper tutorials online but now focuses on Logic. He's fully blind as well. Check out logic.band to get in touch with him. He may be able to hook you up with the old Reaper stuff. He even had a keymap with a bunch of shortcuts.
