Visually Impaired Gamers! (self.Blind)
submitted by casinntra
Hi everyone! Sorry in advance if this is a little bit long 😊

My name is Adj and I’ve always had a gaming hobby ever since I can remember. I’ve also been legally blind since birth. This hasn’t technically stopped me from gaming, but it’s brought a few hurdles along the way

I’m making this post because I see very minimal (if at all) visually impaired representation in the gaming community (on YouTube, twitch, or just in mainstream stuff), even just in making games more accessible for us.
This has impacted me, as I’m sure it has for a lot of you, how you play games with sighted friends and other visually impaired people, regardless the platform or game.

My idea is to start streaming games as an outwardly visually impaired person, giving my two cents on accessibility and ways to improve games along the way. Even just having fun in general like everyone else does. I want representation for us and I would like it to be as authentic as possible.

My goal is to do playthroughs over a range of different consoles and types of games (PC, PlayStation, and Nintendo Switch are what I have on hand) to really get an expansive review on gaming as someone who is visually impaired. I was wondering if I started this up, how many people would tune in? And if it’s even a good idea in the first place?

On top of this I have created a survey specifically for people like us! It’s about gaming experiences, if you think games (regardless of platform) are accessible to the visually impaired/blind community, and how things can be improved. This is to give me a better idea of everyone else’s experiences considering the blind community is a very diverse one!
The link will be at the end of the post.

I hope everyone has a fantastic day/night and I hope to hear from some people!

I'd watch! More representation is always great.

I once toyed with the idea of blind blind let's plsys but lack the time and confidence to pull it off. I'll support anyone with the guts to put their creative energy to good use.

Aa!!! thank you so much!! I’m struggling to make it into something tangible right now and it’s nice hearing someone else had a similar idea, kinda gives me more motivation tbh

I'm a visually impaired gamer too 😁✌️
casinntra [OP] 2 points 3y ago
That’s great! What do you find yourself playing?
Pickleweede 2 points 3y ago
Sea of Thieves is my only online game.
I'm awful. I get our crew in trouble all the time. I push the wrong buttons and get disoriented on screen, run into skeletons who have powder kegs, and generally contribute to the sinking of our ship on every quest. TAWs favorite worse player.
I also like adventure and rpg games on switch, PS4 and emulators.

That’s not too bad! I tend to be the sinking ship amongst my friends too not gonna lie 😂

Hey man been streaming less than a year myself. Been registered blind from birth too. Similar story to yourself and felt the lack of representation. I’ve recently reached 500 followers on twitch and now starting to love to YouTube too doing reviews etc for blind and or vi people. If you wanted some advice on growth or any tips. As using a webcam some folks struggled with I’d be happy to help. My twitch name is Dpgeu but I’m open to talking

Hey yeah dude that sounds amazing! I’ll definitely chuck you a follow. Congratulations on 500 man! How’d you get started?
dpgeu 2 points 3y ago
Thanks I’m about to go live. And well I had no idea about doing it but I got very sick and had to leave my work. For a year I was told I’d have to recover so I just started and well I’ve decided to pursue it. So any support is good support

That’s a crazy thing turned good thing! If you’re still live I’ll tune in, I’ve just woken up (australian time)

If you have a good personality for it I'd happily watch and possibly donate as well.
A few others doing similar things include TJ The blind gamer, Sightless Kombat, Superblindman, and Liam Erven.
Posting your Twitch archives to a youtube channel and having a unique handle will help too, as many blind people still find Twitch difficult to use with a screen reader.
Audiogames.net is another good place to post about upcoming streams.

Thank you so much, that’s so much appreciated!!! I’ll check them all out, it may be the same as my name here as I really can’t find anything that really pops up to me honestly

No Problem. I forgot to mention ablegamers.org too. They may be able to help you with equipment, techniques, or exposure.

Thanks so much!!

I'd definitely give you a follow :)

Out of curiosity, are you considering having a face cam on the stream?
casinntra [OP] 1 points 3y ago
I’m not sure yet, the webcam on my laptop isn’t fantastic (on top of the fact it’s placed below the screen instead of on top ugh) and I can’t afford to really buy a better one so I was thinking of starting out without one and then using one a bit later
