Ios 14 Image recognition? (self.Blind)
submitted by throwaway153463
I’ve heard That voice-over in iOS 14 will be able to recognise images. I’ve heard it will be able to read the text in images and describe them. Has anyone tried this? How good is it?

Microsoft's Seeing AI can do this already on current iPads with iOS 12 and iOS 13.

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/ai/seeing-ai

It can continually read short text, such as the dish labels at a buffet. It can read some handwriting and it can scan and read document pages.

It can describe people, though it sometimes gets the gender and age wrong to much amusement.

It can take a good stab at describing a scene.

It can recognise some currencies.

It can read the bar-code of many products, tell you what it is and sometimes provides links to further information.

It can give you information about light sources and colour.

Thanks. I was just wondering about iOS 14 because it might be more convenient to just have voice-over describe an image that i find on the internet rather than haveing to open it in Seeing AI. Also I wonder whether voice-over or seeing AI would be more accurate.

Are you are imaging that when a web-page or document is read out by VoiceOver it describes any images without relying on a description embedded in the web page. That could be really useful if it works.

Maybe both systems will use the same technology.

Lol yah, though whenever I take a picture of my cats, lots of times, it says it's a cat, but doesn't describe the cat's colors, so I don't know which cat it is. Sometimes it has thought my cat was a dog haha. And every once in a while, it will mention the colors of a cat. It's just as likely to say, a cat lying on a bed as anything haha. Wish I could name photos on IOS. Have tried labeling them, but sometimes, a photo that wasn't labeled will call itself the name I used for a different photo, so labeling it doesn't work so well for me lol.

I haven't tried iOS 14 yet, but VoiceOver in iOS can already describe some things, including recognizing text. Just perform a three-finger tap on the image.

Yah sometimes it can recognize text. Sometimes it reads it with errors, or even though there is text, it says image may contain text. Certainly has a way to go but am looking forward to improvements.

How can I get iOS 14? When I go into software update it says it’s up to date I’m on 13.5 I think it was

iOS 14 is in beta which means there will be a lot of bugs, it’s not recommended that you install it on your main device because it will be very buggy. It will be released to everyone in September. If you really want to get it now search on google for Apple beta program from your device and you can install it from there.
