Assuming it is, which most folks on this sub don't think it is, what alternative words or phrases do you suggest?

I think it depends on context. For a conversation on race, I would use the word privilege. For example, if you never had to consider something a person of color has to consider every day, that is a form of privilege. In other circumstances, maybe an unawareness?

If you are thinking now about analogies with "white privilege" as discussed by Robin DiAngelo or microaggressions, there might be something to dig into, but I think the equivalents are elsewhere than language that just uses the word blind.

Well the use of blindspot isn't ableist. Your blindspot while driving a car describes a area that is out of your line of vision and cannot be seen, you are blind to it. However, if you are concerned with the use of the word, here are some synonyms you may try.
You could simply use the term Gap or gap in experience if you really wanna play it safe. Personally the term blindspot never bothered me however I don’t represent everyone.
Great thread. Your comment in it is particularly well written, I appreciate the link.

English is not my first language, but i think blindspot is a common saying so I don’t mind at all!

I appreciate the reply!

It's fine.

I appreciate the response, thanks.

Not ableist at all. Go right ahead

Thank you for your response.

This is one of those things which fat, blue-haired social justice warriors go on and on about, but actual blind people couldn't spare a fuck to give.

This is already some leftist crap.
Get out of here with that nonsense.
philos_albatross5 points3y ago
I appreciate your reply.
edit: thank you for being honest. I have a (sighted) colleague who has made a very big deal about my using that term, calling it ableist. I kinda figured it wasn't too hurtful, but I figured I'd ask folks from the community so I wasn't speaking for people. I really do appreciate your reply.
Winnmark2 points3y ago
Well... I guess, if nothing else, you've *seen* the spectrum from end to end regarding these ideologies.
So, although I guess I could have been more respectful, you get my point, right?
philos_albatross3 points3y ago
For sure. Also, the thing about not categorizing people based on traits is real. Some folks might be offended and others might think it's leftist bullshit. I appreciate your candor.

Tell your friend we're all offended that they think they have a right to be offended in our behalf.
I'm kidding, of course. Given the context, it's reasonable that they would raise the issue (not necessarily making a big deal of of it though) and it's reasonable of you to ask about it.
