Sighted person here. I was wondering, what do you guys think of emojis?(self.Blind)
submitted by lollipoptart_
Are they useful or annoying? A lot of people on Reddit don’t use them because they say “they’re for normies”. Do emojis like :) and :D annoy you? What do you think when people put spaces between letters l i k e t h i s ? Or images made out of characters? Would it be helpful to use emojis instead of a colon and a letter? Just curious about what you think when dealing with this stuff.

Emojis are useful, Our screenreaders can even detect some of them but W R I T I N G L I K E T H I S I S J U S T A N N O Y I N G because it's going to read those letters one by one and that's kindda annoying.
Revolyze22 points3y ago
If it makes you feel any better, it's annoying for non-blind people as well.

All caps is the worst

I'm using Espeak and it can read them not sure about other TTS
TK_Sleepytime12 points3y ago
I don't mind other people using emojis. I can't see the images well enough to use them - I'm terrified I will accidentally send an inappropriate reaction because I thought it was something else. I use text emojis though! :)

If you use NVDA, you can get the Emoticons add-on where the most popular 70-80-ish emojis are all labeled. Also on both Android and IOS VoiceOver and Talkback reads the names of emojis if you tap on them.

Emojis are fine, just try reading computer code.
bscross327 points3y ago
I don't mind unless people spam them in their social media names or in general. I know of people who just despise them, but there is this rather insular element of the blind community who detest change. The other stuff when you ReAlLy WaNt tO sHoUt, I hate that as it fucks with my screen reader horribly. I also hate when people use Cyrillic letters or letters from other alphabets to look cutesy because again, it fucks with my screen reader.

Understandable
saharacanuck6 points3y ago
I like emojies but can’t see them properly on my keyboard or in texts.... so I use the same 3-5 all the time. I really wish I could just type “heart” for example and get a list of all of the options at once . Instead of just one option
lollipoptart_ [OP]2 points3y ago
On iOS (Apple) if you type “heart” then a emoji option shows up in the 3rd place on the suggested word bar above the keyboard. Click it and it will replace the word heart with the emoji.
saharacanuck2 points3y ago
Yes I know. But it will only give me the red heart for example, it won’t give me some of the other options to be able to scroll through.
AndAdapt1 points3y ago
I wrote a small blog post on using the full emoji set on iOS and MacOS. It will give you access to all the heart colours etc.
For a quick reference on all the possible emoji check out this page:
https://github.com/ikatyang/emoji-cheat-sheet#person-fantasy It’s worth noting in that reference guide they use _ between words, whereas in the shortcuts you need a - to separate words.

Thanks!
AndAdapt1 points3y ago
No worries. I have it working under windows too. Just need to write a post about that

Emoticons add-on on NVDA does this
saharacanuck1 points3y ago
How do I set that up?
bjayernaeiy1 points3y ago
Are you running latest update of NVDA? Download and install this addon https://addons.nvda-project.org/addons/emoticons.en.html The link also has a readme on how to use it. Here's a website with more addons you could browse to download. PM me if you need help configuring/setting things up!
saharacanuck1 points3y ago
Thanks. I think there was some miscommunication. I was referring to iPhone . But I will use this for my Mac :)
lollipoptart_ [OP]1 points3y ago
Are you aware your flair says “partially sightef”? Like sighted with an f instead of a d? I wasn’t sure if it was a joke or on accident. If it’s a joke it’s pretty funny
saharacanuck2 points3y ago
Hahaha i wish It were a joke. Nope, just a partially sighted accident. Thanks for the heads up.
Laser_Lens_46 points3y ago
Every screen reader I've used can read them. Just don't use more than a few at once. I think that goes for everyone, regardless of visual acuity
MizzerC4 points3y ago
Bane of my existence.
I don't use them, and I loathe when someone uses them towards me. On screen magnification, here I come!
Ant54772 points3y ago
I use them from time to time, sparingly, but I hate when sighted people use nothing but emoji in their replies or instead of words in the sentences, it annoys me
midnight-muffins2 points3y ago
So I'm not blind, just visually impaired, so for me it depends on the emoji. I think they and emoticons are super good at communicating the tone of a conversation or text post, but I can only really comprehend the simplest versions of them.
For example I can totally recognise simple faces but the more complex they get, say animals or the families or anything with lots of detail, it's too much in too small a space for me to grasp. Sinpler the better for me
Marconius2 points3y ago
I rarely use emojis because hunting down the right ones to use and typing them is annoying as hell. When people use them sparingly, it's better. People don't realize that each emoji has Alt text, so they are fully described. At the same time, people don't know how they are described so it gets frustrating when they try to use emojis as substitutes for words.
For example, there's an emoji of a hand with the index finger raised, so it's like a hand indicating One item. People have used this to try to shorten the string "One more thing" by using the emoji in place of "one." What ends up happening is we screen reader users hear "Front facing hand with index finger extended more thing." which is just dumb.
I hate it when people string tons of emojis in a row, either the same one or multiple, since then I have to sit and listen to all that alt text while waiting to get to actual text content. If they are all inline with text, it's very difficult to skip through them all to find the text.
That being said, I use emoticons all the time. Typing the sideways punctuation faces gets interpreted by screen readers which is nice. So ":" becomes "smiley" etc.
modulus2 points3y ago
I don't mind them all that much in moderation, though sometimes they result in codepage issues or the like, but that's a Unicode problem more generally. I'm more used to ascii smileys such as :-) or ;) and they're easier to write.
There are two things about emoji that are annoying though: one is the tendency to pile them up, sometimes the same one repeated, or a long combination of different ones; the other is how the canonical description may not have to do a lot with the cultural meaning. For example, apparently the aubergine emoji has some kind of sexual overtone. I'd never be able to work that out if someone didn't tell me.
h3xd0m2 points3y ago
My girlfriend is blind and from what I know of her experience, she has no problem with emojis. The screen reader reads the emoji out loud in a descriptive manner.
So, a standard smiley like this :-) Would be read as "Smiling face". (I'm on PC and couldn't make a real emoji smiling face. And I'm aware that the smiley I just wrote would be read out as "colon dash right parenthesis" or something like that)

I love to use emojis. If I can’t find one, i write a certain word and an appropriate emoji shows up in the suggestion-bar over the keyboard.
If I for example write “apple” on the keyboard, an 🍎 will show up as a suggestion for me.
I like this feature since the emojis are more appropriate and you don’t have to look for that one emoji for an eternity!

Oh cool. I only use the zoom but I might try that so that I can get a better description! Thanks
