That’s basically what I want. Has it been done, can it be done?

I would also be interested in this, we run vhf/uhf radios when we race in mexico and its frustrating to not be sure what channel im on before I start transmitting.

you want a Baofeng uv5R handheld. It talks and is accessible. There's a guide on how to set it up without sighted assistance.

Could you please post the guide!!

Thanks! I actually have about 10 of them. We buy them because theyre so cheap if they get lost/disapear in mexico its no biggie. I need something better for my truck(s) which are all 60w and bigger radios.

Raddioditty GD77 I am not sure on all the details but I know the group Blind HAMS has several members using it with a fully accessible firmware.

How do I join that group?

I have a Skywave SSB radio which is usable but not totally accessible in that it does not talk. The pros are that it has both a dial to scan with and also direct frequency entry so you can tune to a specific frequency. Its the one I have so I've learned how to use it. Its a great radio and I'd be happy to answer any questions you might have about it.

Yes. I have done the same thing with my radio. Learn how to enter frequency and you can use the dial on it. Mine is a Grundig Satellit 750
