Phone for blind elderly (self.Blind)
submitted by YearsOfGlitter
I am looking for a phone for my blind elderly father with Parkinson’s disease. He has used a 3g flip phone with scrolling and voice command. He needs a phone with large buttons and voice command. I am in the US and really desperate to help my dad. Any advise appreciated.

iPhone is the best mainstream option, but if that doesn't work, consider taking a look at Blindshell. It's an Android-based phone with physical buttons that talks to you.

$1

Find out if Doro phones are available for you in the US.

https://www.doro.com/

They do some chunky phones with good tactile feedback aimed at the seniors and dementia friendly market.

This being Reddit, I try to avoid sales-related messages, but the $1 may be an option to consider. It has tactile buttons, all menus speak, and has several features beyond making calls if they wish to utilize them.
I know of others where dexterity has made the iPhone harder to use, so thought I'd throw this out there.

Full disclosure: Yes this is my business. For more general info or for people outside the U.S., here's the $1

I’m really glad you mentioned this. I actually had come to this conclusion independently a few hours ago. I’m going to call one of the US distributors I found and order one tomorrow. At this point we are so desperate for a solution, that we’re willing to try anything and after watching a few videos on this phone and reading about it I think it is probably our best option.

You might want to check out KaiOS phones. You might have to buy it online (and make sure the handset is compatible with US networks), but a lot of them offer Google Assistant and fairly chunky, tactile buttons.

iPhones are usually the most accessible phones on the market. The latest iPhone SE 2020 would probably be a good pick if you don’t want to spend too much.

The touchscreen just doesn’t work because of his movement disorder unfortunately combined with blindness makes it impossible.

Ios has some accessibility features for people with low dexterity, I don’t know if that would work for your father though, but it’s a thing. You might want to give $1 a read, see if it applies? Otherwise, I don’t really know sorry.

Yeah that helps, thank you. However the issue is combining dexterity with blindness.
