Social Distancing When You Can't Depend on Your Sight (self.Blind)
submitted by AdaptiVision
Hi all. We recently published a blog post with ideas and tech tips for social distancing with no or low vision. Take a look if you have a moment, and drop us a comment to let us know your thoughts. We hope by continuing this conversation we can help raise awareness regarding the unique challenges facing the blind and low vision community during the current health crisis. $1

Never leaving my house works for me.

I hear you. The challenges surrounding accessibility are real. Hopefully, we'll begin to see greater improvements in the near future.

Good article, but tbh none of these are foolproof enough that I would feel safe leaving my house. Even when I have my guide dog with me and when I used to use a white cane, there was a solid percentage of the population that wouldn't realize I'm blind. Combine that with the fact that I really honestly feel that an ICU doctor would choose treating a sighted patient over me based solely on my disability...I haven't left my house since March except to get prescriptions. It's not worth the risk, although I do have the privilege of being able to use instacart etc so I don't have to leave.

Thanks so much for sharing from your experience. My hope is that the technology, together with accessibility/social awareness, will continue to evolve as we face together the challenges of this health crisis.

I've not left the house since April, thanks to being able to work from home. First trip out is on Saturday hopefully, and im kinda dreading it.

That is a big step. If you have a chance, let us know how it goes.

I absolutely will. I'm considered visually impaired (fluctuates between around 20/70 and 20/100) and im going out so I can get back to a hobby I love. I'm a figure skater and haven't trained since March.

Good for you! As an athlete with impaired vision, do you use any adaptive tools? Always curious to hear what's working for people!

Unfortunately the UK government advised on Friday rinks couldn't open for at least another 2 weeks, so nothing to report.

In terms of adaptive tools, I have a very bright high visibility vest that tells others I'm visually impaired, and during competitions I have a coach on the ice at any time I'm sharing the ice with others. Other than that, I just get out and skate.
