Entrepreneurship for the blind community (self.Blind)
submitted by Kylefornicationn
What are your thoughts on entrepreneurship for blind people?

What are the challenges? If there was more resources and support for blind people interested in becoming entrepreneurs, would you participate? If you are unemployed / have been unemployed and actively searching for work, what has stopped you from starting a business? What advantages/disadvantages do a blind people have relating to entrepreneurship?

An interesting quote from an article related:

|Her research into the US market showed that 35 per cent of company founders identified themselves as **dyslexic**, compared with 15 per cent in the general population"

A lot less investors are willing to take a chance with entrepreneurs with vision loss. It isn't impossible, but it is definitely harder. Investors are looking to make their money back, and they can also have their own biases.

I'm a director of a company, although it's not really a company with premises and we didn't have any investment to start up with, it just grew organically. We're a sort of agency for musicians. It involves an awful lot of phone calls and emails but I can't say there's anything specifically harder about it than just being self employed normally.

I guess ability to skim over lists on the computer and make notes while on the phone would be cool. But that goes for a lot of things. Speed is everything and while as everyone always says there are solutions to everything, they are often not fast.

Thanks for sharing...

Do you think your lack of vision has been an asset (lack of a better word) in being a successful entrepreneur.

I don't think I'm really an entrepreneur, we just got scared of having so much liability in our own bank accounts!

And no, it has not been an asset, it is a shocking pain in the ass as it always is. I was not born into this situation and I will never sugar coat it. People are really surprised for some reason when I say that being blind is mainly just really really inconvenient.

Yeah it sure is a pain in the ass but from my perspective, I feel like, from my perspective... Blind people are constantly trying to adapt day to day in a world that is really difficult for them... with I think is a testament to their problem solving skills, which I think is the most important characteristic of an entrepreneur

I am a part of a family of business owners and I'm an owner myself. I have been doing business for 5 years and its fun but it can be difficult sometimes. It takes time to run and build a successful business but it is worth it. Business ownership is absolutely important for decreasing the pervasive poverty in the blind world. Jobs are unreliable but businesses are your own thing and yes, its harder but it is ultimately, worth it.

Thanks for your input... If you are comfortable sharing... How bad is your vision? Do your customers know about your vision?

I'm totally blind and yes, everyone who I talk to knows that I'm blind. It's something I don't hide and I never considered it. People generally don't talk about it with me though because I focus on their needs.
